wednesday 2/14 report

Post by skiadikt »

the big news was the 4" of snow. had forgotten what it feels like to ski real snow. but brrrr ... pretty crispy out there. fortunately the sun played some hide & seek and looks to have fully broken out by the close. a very light turnout. 9-12:45 shift. overall thought the skiing was pretty good. but with all the ice underneath, wouldn't call it a full on pow day but beggars ...

at the bell made some trax on snowdon. floating on full house & upper flush, though you could feel the scratch underneath on flush. ski bum wednesday meant a number of highline laps. first run down good but again you knew what lurked below. fwiw when i returned for my 2nd race around 12:45 - scariest run of the season. just glass. yikes ...

off to bear to warmup. skiing there much improved over the past couple days. could find some pockets of pow on stash>maker. skier's left bear claw was beautiful. pit ok and lower burst good. again skier's left upper wildfire mostly pow but you're teeth got rattled if you strayed too far into the big icy bumps. GETS :D . lower was decent.

caught the rope drop on needles and it was quite good as was cruise. mid supe>lower lark good. upper section old supe good. the final third was an ice sheet.

Wind scrubbed areas were no fun, the rest was decent, and as skiadkt says even 4 inches skis like a lot when you're stahvin. Light traffic made it possible to still stay in the (tracked out) soft stuff at noon. The new snow should till in great and be a big improvement for tomorrow.

Old Supe - ice flow lower third
Mid Supe choose your lane carefully, otherwise good above High Road, which is where you should exit. Lower Skylark surprisingly good, expected more scour. Stash was a disappointment, bailed on lower Dreammaker.

Mid/Late Day Bush Report: Nice change of pace. Overall, a bit less icy at the Bush, especially on their groomed terrain, though the ungroomed nats are rock hard underneath with some frozen in tracks to deal with [a result of the recent warmup and quick following freeze we all got]. About 4" new at the bottom and 5-6" up top. Best skiing was in places on the nats where they had been groomed a week or two ago.

Nice to have North Lynx chair running. Both of the groomers were very good and each with ungroomed on the sides. Down lower, Waterfall was decent icy powder and best run was Sleeper.

ROTD: Steins Run. Looked like a new recent blow based on the whales with and edgeable surface on top of the ridge. Skiers right of the ridge was great with the new snow, though a double fall line, and rock hard bumps if you went too far right. Toughest ROTD was Spillesville due to the firm, rough surface underneath and not being able to see all of it with the new snow. Glad I did it though. Ripcord was also excellent with edgeable, recently groomed surface in the middle with lots of new snow on it. Found a nice line to the right, but not all the way, under the chair.

Fun day.
