wednesday 2/28 report

Post by skiadikt »

sort of a gray letter day. fog an issue. certainly a letdown after the last week or so. drip held off until i left around 12:30. mtn is rather fugly. will call it no turnout - perhaps the lightest i've seen this season.

ski bum wednesday. opened on highline. absolutely terrible. frozen groomer trax and chunks mixed w soft snow. wrotd and a contender for wroty. decided discretion was the better part of valor.

at bear everything groomed skied well for the most part. lower burst perfectly groomed. some stuff was set up early but did soften. dream park a case in point. for giggles did a peak to creek. coverage holding up. needles fine when you emerged from the fog. only nat i hit was lower stitch line. soft, sticky snow that you sunk into. lark fine.

cascade decent and finished on GB which was good. mtn's gonna have a lot of work putting this place back together. a surprising amount of bare spots showing.

I think wind is an issue right now across New England, the gondola cabins at Stratton are blowing sideways.

Trail report says Caper, Lower Chute, Lower GN (so only 1 route), a pretty protected area from wind.

Okemo some going down low.
Sunday River, Mount Snow, Sugarbush, the Loaf, Stratton idle.

I would've liked to see more, but as you pointed out, no one is going 100% this time of year. Many resorts have finished snowmaking for the year.

I expected to see the entire place lit up until I started checking the other mountains and saw more points of reference. There is very limited snowmaking going on right now anywhere in New England which sucks because they really could have all used this short window to resurface. If the wind calms down they will just have tonight it looks like. The next warmup is sadly going to be the only savior to get terrain open again.

for sure with this wind, all you're doing is making snow in the woods. operationally this season they've tried to make snow when they can get max production. hopefully they can make more as the winds die down. unfortunately the window is short.

a quick perusal of NE resorts indicates that they're all talking about wind effecting operations. at this moment most of the main lifts at stowe are either closed or hold. okemo & sunday river similar.

on the fence about skibum at pico today. just lower mtn & 49'er open and probably a rock hard course.

uh no ... from the report:
Our snowmaking team is taking advantage of cold temps to resurface terrain after late February’s weather rollercoaster ride. We will continue to make snow tonight on Caper, Lower Bunny Buster, Lower Chute and sections of Lower Great Northern down to the Ramshead base area. We’re also going to hit Skyelark and Bearly tomorrow before the temps rise this weekend. We plan to make snow throughout March whenever weather conditions allow.
