POWDR to manage Zion Natl Park concessions

Post by GlacierBoy »

So this is interesting news about POWDR. What is their core competency ? Managing ski resorts (not renewing real estate leases, obviously!)?? Is this a distraction and cash drain for future investment in POWDR resorts and especially Killington?

Yesterday, POWDR announced that it has entered into an agreement with the National Park Service to run the concessions at Zion National Park. This will include operating lodging, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, and other visitor services. POWDR will take over from Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Inc., and will begin operating these services on January 1st, 2025.

Operating lodging, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, and other visitor services are in scope of managing a ski resort. Killington does these activities well and they probably generate the best margin. So why not if they can make an easy buck?

"not renewing real estate leases, obviously!"

Nice dig at Powder for the biggest ski area debacle ever! Losing your crown jewel, Park City, because somebody did not return the paperwork to renew the sweetheart lease from the 1960s they had on the ski trail land. The land company sold then sold the lease to Vail for like 20 times as much! Maybe YAN rushing out one of the first high speed chairs with bad grips killing 7 people bankrupting the company was worse.
