Another Thursday Report

Post by powbmps »

I didn't make it up to Bear until about 9:30. They were turning cars away, saying that everything but Snowshed and the Snowdon Triple were on wind-hold.

I wasn't going to turn around without getting something so I joined this crowd:

There was a pretty good tail wind on the hike up, but it was right in your face at the top.

I didn't want to ski DF solo, so I tried to find some other people heading that way, but everyone I met was heading down OL. This part of OL was okay:

I have to accept the fact that mogul skis suck in these conditions. The "variable" snow conditions were a bit rough. After flailing down to the bottom, I decided to side step and hit this tiny jump:

For the finale I landed on my face in front of a group of boarders.

I drove over to the base of K and several more lifts had opened up.

There was no line so I rode up the Snowdon Triple. That lift blows. I was tempted to offload at that low spot. The run under the lift was good, especially the steeper section at the bottom. There was a nice small air-to-bush on skiers left.

Then I rode K1 to the top and came down right under the lift. There was some pretty good wind-scoured blue ice at the top. East Fall had some nice snow on it.

When you get to the bottom of East Fall and climb back up to skiers right, there is a fun little air. That wind-blown snow is a bit tough though. I landed centered, sunk in, was tossed over the bars, tucked and rolled and came up on my feet.

It was a bit cold to keep sticking my head in the snow and my legs were shot from the earlier hike, so I called it a day.

Only Snodon and Ramshead running until 11:45 when the K1 went online. All snow heavily windblown and settled - still pow but no fluff. Royal Flush, Chop Chop, Toilet Bowl saweet. First time in those trees this season. Same goes for Anarchy and Julio. Wind effected up top in the trees on that side of the ridge which kinda surprised me, but got better the lower you got. Knee to waist on the lower parts...straightlining huge sections in there was a new experience. Usually you are too busy trying to protect your edges in the rock garden. Flume skied like a ribbed condom. Either treeline on Lower O was nicely blown in, but the middle was blown bare, same with Superstar. Somewhere, Nowhere, Skyebits all nice with portions of Skyebits windblown and a touch crusty on top - but easy to blast through. Soft snow, but skied-on by the time we got to Highline and Conclusion. Conclusion woods had large drifts...fun shots over the waist. First decent hucks of the season in Helter Skelter, knee felt great dropping the cinder block. Cold and windy today, but well bundled it didnt bother me at all. Ms. Chaser busted the battery clip for her boot heaters and her foot quickly turned to a block of ice, so we bailed.

Talked to someone in the gondola who said there were a ton of people hiking OL to ski the Fiddle. Said they counted over 200 people in the line as they were hiking up. Never made it to Bear myself.

Oh and ski Pico tomorrow. The peak chair never ran today...

That's ok. Hopefully Italy will rock and I'm thinking there will be another big dump in March up at K when we get back.
