Care to commit? My opinion is bump skiers have the basics of gate skiing down already and then have to add the 3rd dimension. Gate skiing is 2 dimensional. Therefore bump skiers have the advantage.

I think it's "gay" (as in man on man ass-penetration), to teach little kids to only ski bumps or only race.

Seriously? When I'm a parent, I'm going to teach my kids how to enjoy skiing. Some bumps, some racing, some jumping, a good technical foundation, and lots of fun freeskiing........

I think you will need to take into consideration what your child prefers. Iceman started in racing then switched over to freestyle because he likes hucking and stuff. The Snow Princess is in racing right now but MamaW would like to see her switching over to freestyle. I asked her yesterday what she might want to do and her response was "which one will get me the most prices if I win?". You will learn that you cannot bend your child to your will that easily. The important thing is to get your child to enjoy the sport regardless of what discipline he/she chooses.

for the recreational skier, it depends on how you view the question. Most people with no racing background can make it down a race course holding some degree of form, they just may do it very slowly. For a recreational skier with no bump technique, it'll take one turn to see the difficulty that person is experiencing. They too will make it down but if you consider a line the equivalent of gates, i'd think it would be much easier for a decent bumper to stay in the course then a recreational racer with no bump skills to maintain a consistent line.

both may suck doing each respective discipline, but the racer inexperienced in bumps will probably look alot worse then the bumper inexperienced in gates. Someone trained in the nuances of racing may disagree completely but to the untrained eye (skier), i think the visual evidence would point to the bumper making an easier transition.

as far as world class, well, the aerials in bump skiing have no counterpart in racing so i dont see that in their favor.

Regardless I see your points. It could go either way, as some of those butt wigglers need to learn how to carve and seperate their legs.
I see fun in doing each and each can help improve anyones skiing.

I doubt HS kids will be in a skateboard or snowboard park. If they want to do that they can do it for free.

yeah, the original post was regarding world class skiers/bumpers but the thread had gone in a few directions so i took the angle from the average skiers perspective. when it comes to the top of the heap, the only thing i would wonder about is how many world cup racers can throw backflips or sloooow 360's in a bump field. maybe most of them, i dont have a clue. once you get to that point, i would think doing just about anything on skis is almost second nature.

Interesting that you posted that today...yesterday I watched J-4 and J-5 kids who were ripping it up running gates have a hard time on a mogul course.

Once again, operative term is "world class".

OK, lets turn it around:

Do you think M4 and M5 or F4 and F5's would have trouble with a Slalom course for J4 and J5s?

J4J5m4m5...dont realy know unless the kids are naturalls...but a j2 j1 can easly cross over.
If any one here has ever been coached in the at of skiing the gates, They allso have been scholled in skiing a great line in the bumps...now how many bump/freestyle coaches take thier kids into the bambo jungle (the gates)?

I think most expert skiers have good balance and are pretty good at both. I did a couple of fun races and never had raced before but still finished pretty well although a second and a half behind the forerunner. I also entered a couple bump contests and the kids were just to quick for me . My first one was at 40.(I guess I'm getting old)

Dont be silly you know that no pro just gets thrown into the mix....So-So racers often cross over and excell in the bumps et all.
