NEW YORK — A 23-year-old man surfing a New York City subway train is dead after striking the inside of a tunnel.

Police say the man had apparently wedged himself into a space in front of a set of closed doors on a southbound C train before he was killed at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the tunnel between 145th and 155th streets. He has not been identified pending notification of family.

Police say the man struck a handrail on a catwalk in the tunnel and died from head injuries. He was not hit by the train.

Transit officials say service on the track was suspended for about an hour-and-a-half, causing delays on the A and D lines from 125th to 59th streets.

In second place yestrday was this guy:

An attempt to entertain his family ended in death yesterday for a New York father who was struck by a Manhattan-bound express train in Riverside.

The man, 55, had jumped onto the tracks at the Riverside train station to place on penny on a track there and show his wife and three daughters how it would be flattened by a rail car, according to Sgt. John Rizzitelli of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Looking at the photo, he could have just rolled under the platform out of the way if he was having trouble getting up.

The Metro-North train, an express from Stamford to New York City, was traveling about 75 mph when it struck the man, Rizzitelli said. He died immediately.

The southbound tracks appear to offer a clear view of oncoming trains for several hundred yards

That's 5 seconds at 75 mph. They also warn you many times loudly of an approaching high speed train.

Hardly entertaining. Extreamly sad that his children and wife had to see that; just terrible. This guy was clearly not using common sense. His poor family....

Hey yeah, I get my jollies by laughing at someone's tragic death as much as the next guy. It is sooo funny to say "Darwin Award!" So blazingly comedic. And it makes me feel so much better. Fa fa fa. But you know, I've been laughing here, in smug ecstasy, for a few hours now, and with regards to the 55 year old guy, I stopped laughing. I'm trying to figure out how Darwin applies. You know, he has kids. Ok, get it? His stupid gene passed on.

And here I am, smart as the dickens but no kids. Shlt. Darwin just kicked me in my fat ass. Maybe I should get drunk and have some unprotected sex.

I don't find anything funny about it at all. I'm just amazed at how uncommon common sense is some times.
