why snowbird sucks!

Ok bro i was in fact there yesterday and the day before (saturday)...Saturday was STELLAR corn skiing....then a cold front dropped in and evaporate cooling took place and the snow froze up. This is TYPICAL SPRING SKIING IN UTAH.....snowpack freezes overnight and turns into something resembling a coral reef until the sun can come out and soften it..unfortunately that DID NOT happen yesterday. Groomers were "OK" but anything slightly off trail was nasty...you gotta take the good with the bad...there was nothing the groomers couldve done with that snowpack. Sorry you didn't know this is typical here, but thems the breaks.pcgrantham wrote:So I'm assuming you were there skiing this yesterday(sunday)? If not then you have no idea what the condtions are like. If so and you said it was good then you are insane. I've been to snowbird 6 times in the last 3 years and yesterday was the first time it sucked. and remember I'm used to east coast conditions. Everyone at the mountain we talked to after we did a run said the same thing, it sucked and was a sheet of ice.nyc snowboarder wrote:You're insane. I been here all winter and this place is truly amazing. 550+ inches this season, 25+ deep powder days, probably riding til July in mineral basin while mountain biking on the front face. What more can you ask for. Coming from East Coast conditions, how can you have any complaints. So the weather this week has been in the upper 60's with bluebird skies, the mountain conditions were wet powder, after a dump last week, wet packed powder and slush. Last night the cold front passed and everything froze up. Today was cloudy and very windy and cold. What do you expect? Boiler plate everywhere! Isnt this normal in K town? How do you expect them to groom all of snowbird. Be happy this mountain is open while all the others are closed. It's late April in Utah, what do you expect? Warm days / cold nights. Every morning this time of year the conditions are hard packed, in the afternoon everything gets really loose and slushy, then everything refreezes again. They don't have a snow guarantee like killington does. So they should give everyone a voucher to use another day after a cold night? Besides, the lift ticket was discounted anyway and you got in a run. You would be making money if they gave you a voucher for next year. That doesn't make much business sense. You should of known this before you went there. If you read the ski report, you would of known this days ago. http://www.utahskiweather.com/discussions.php It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that when it gets very cold out,( like last night ) everything going refreeze. I just can't understand how anyone could complain at Snowbird this time of year.

This is actually spring skiing everywhere. its why there's no rush to get 1st chair.KMartman wrote:Ok bro i was in fact there yesterday and the day before (saturday)...Saturday was STELLAR corn skiing....then a cold front dropped in and evaporate cooling took place and the snow froze up. I wasn't there yesterday because I knew the whole mountain was going to freeze up. I guess Im too smart. ( again read the weather report )http://www.utahskiweather.com/discussions.php or http://www.avalanche.org/~uac/newadvisory/advisory.php I was there 4 days last week and every day was fine. Yes it wasn't typical powder snowbird conditions, but again it is late April. I been there all week and it's been amazing. Im actually going there today, tomorrow, etc... I expect the same conditions as yesterday, except the sun is out today and everything will soften up in the afternoon. I still dont understand why you complaining. You should of known this being the rider that you say you are. Every other resort in Utah has the same conditions. Can you imagine if every resort had to give vouchers to people like you when then didnt like the conditions. Have fun going to another resort in Utah because everything else is closed. My advise to you is come to Utah between Christmas and St Patricks Day and you wont have to worry about hard pack conditions in the morning. To me, SNOWBIRD is a top 3 resort in America on par with Squaw and Jackson

That's because the sun never came out and it was cold and windy all day. Even in the spring that wont help soften up the conditions. This afternoon will be amazing there. Another bluebird day today with temp in the mid 50's The sun shine hard all day in the mineral basin so that will be the place to ride today. Again not everyday will be perfect at Snowbird. It's still better then no skiing at all like 95% of the resorts in America. Blame mother nature not the Bird.

Conditions today for the final day at Alta were a bit rough- cold temperatures and clouds led to nearly no softening of the snow, and most runs were very hard, if not boiler plate. The scattered snow showers did not add much- just a slight dusting. Tomorrow should be similar, without the clouds. Hopefully the sun will soften the snow up a bit despite cold temperatures. Tuesday should warm up considerably- expect harder surfaces in the morning and mush by the afternoon. If you catch the snow in the middle it could make for some nice skiing, though. Wednesday night into Thursday there's a chance of snow, so conditions on Thursday could improve.

Today was a chilly day in the mountains with temperatures barely reaching into the 30s at most resorts, while the Cottonwoods hung in the 20s for most of the day.
Monday will again be cold, but with more sun. Tuesday we'll see significantly higher temperatures as warm air moves in ahead of our next trough, which should arrive Wednesday night. Right now it looks like we have a decent chance at some snow, so cross your fingers that the moisture makes it this far south! Thursday will be chilly, but the sun will be out again on Friday.
Next weekend it looks like we'll be stuck on the northern edge of a shallow ridge- maybe if we close our eyes it will go away and become a huge trough and winter will come back?

I was only out there for 3 days so we wanted to maximize the the skiing/riding. This year because of job responsibilities and my son't spring break this was the only time I could get out there this year.
On a good note, the director of sales responded to my e-mail and offered me to come out and ride next year on the resort. This is smart business since I'll be bringing 2 others (and yes it will be in March next season) that will be paying full price. Otherwise we would have probably spent most of the week at Powder Mountain/Snowbasin and maybe hit solitude or Brighten.
Amazing. Decent customer service, getting rare as hen's teeth.pcgrantham wrote:nyc snowboarder wrote:pcgrantham wrote:So I'm assuming you were there skiing this yesterday(sunday)? Was at the Bird today and conditions were defiantly very firm. Especially the Lower mountain. Wilbere area was an ice skating ring. I was totally expecting these conditions today as I read the weather report. Still today was another fun day in the Sun at the bird. Tomorrow will be in the upper 60's and bluebird, so the whole mountain will be loose. I can't believe snowbird gave you a voucher to next years season. That's insane. I guess Snowbird doesn't suck anymore.

Was at Solitude and Snowbird for one week immediately before St. Patrick's Day. Both were great, although Solitude surprised me. Solitude was amazingly cheap with very good accommodations and food. Premium ski rentals were $22/day !!! Skied there for 4 days with my son David and we were practically by ourselves. Best lodge food - swedish meatballs over mashed taters with lingonberry sauce and/or hot dog covered in mashed taters with caramelized onions. Powder for days after a snowfall !
Snowbird was bigger, less groomed and it snowed endlessly while we were there. Almost too much as whiteout conditions are no fun. Full strength beer [not on tap] in the Tram Lounge and Karaoke. Small membership fee worth it if you want real drinks. Note: If not staying at Snowbird, road up the mountain closes for avalanche control as required, which included every morning we were there. Benefit -powder for on mountain guests. It can be disconcerting when you awaken to the shaking of windows after explosions for avalanche control.
