Vermont woman killed trying to save cat on Interstate 91
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2010

DUMMERSTON -- A Putney woman was killed Sunday as she tried to rescue a cat walking in the median of Interstate 91.

Cynthia Long, 75, had stopped on the southbound side of the interstate near mile marker 17/95 in Dummerston after she saw the cat, Vermont State Police said. She was struck by a car driven by Jonathan Ribas, 28, of Shelton, Conn.

The southbound lanes were closed for about three hours.

State police said the crash remains under investigation and asks witnesses of the accident to call Vermont State Police in Brattleboro at 254-2382 and ask for Trooper Wagenbach.

Our family drove by the crash just minutes after it happened. Emergency personnel had not yet arrived and a few good samaritans were helping out with traffic and one was putting down those little orange emergency reflector triangles.
It was an incredibly sad scene to witness and I am grateful no one else was injured.
Here is a link to the brattleboro reformer story that describes a little bit more about Cynthia Long and describes in detail the sequence of events.

I feel for her and all... But you have to question the intelligence of her and also her 60 y/o companion thinking it was OK for a 75 y/o to walk across an Interstate highway.

Yes. And think about the 28 y.o. guy driving the car that hit her. He now has to live with the fact that he killed this woman. Even if he's not guilty of any crime or traffic infraction (it doesn't look like he is), it has to be a tough thing to live with.
Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, then overwhelm you with their experience.

Totally agree skidork. She should have called the state police to handle the situation. I am sure we saw her grief stricken friend standing not far away from where she came to rest and I bet she will never forgive herself for not talking her out of it. There was a solar glare on the road right before the crash scene and I am sure that added to a bad visibility issue. It is dangerous enough on the side of the road. No one has any business being in the middle of a highway.
So very thankful there weren't any other injuries.
We were thinking - finally - a clear drive home without snow, ice, pouring r*in, fog and in daylight to boot. Next thing you know we are driving our nine year old twins by a body lying in the road. Others inconvenienced by being stuck on a closed road or re-routed. The 28 year old who hit her must be traumatized.
Be careful out there - seen way too many accidents this season.
