Maple Syrup
I've been raised on VT maple syrup and refuse to eat that HFCS Aunt Jemima crap. We recently ran out at home and while I was in Hannaford this past weekend, I tried buying some more. Most of the maple syrup for sale was from NH. I guess since Hannaford is a New England based supermarket (Maine?), they get their products from the cheapest source. The largest VT size I could find there was 16 ounces.
So, if you buy local VT syrup, where do you get it? I usually buy it by the gallon (it freezes great) and last time I paid around $60 (Grade A Dark Amber). Thanks.

Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, then overwhelm you with their experience.

Sugar and Spice or Mendon Country Store. That's where we get ours. Can't vouch for the prices though. I would assume Hannafords would be cheaper if they had the gallon size.

Re: Maple Syrup
I usually buy Quebec maple syrup. I typically buy it only when it is on sale and stock up.
Mr G likes the HFCS mini pecan pies I make from time to time. Haven't done those since the wine party. HFCS doesn't belong on pancakes or waffles.

Re: Maple Syrup
I heard from a friend that sugaring was off this year. He said to expect to pay more for a gallon this year.
Heard rumors of $ 80 a gallon?

Just got some at Maplefields in Woodstock - probably overpriced but they had plenty in all sizes (Vallee Farms)spanky wrote:I've been raised on VT maple syrup and refuse to eat that HFCS Aunt Jemima crap. Ocean State Job lot has the Canadian Grade A for $17 a quart.Geoff wrote:I usually buy Quebec maple syrup. I typically buy it only when it is on sale and stock up.

But we actually bought some this weekend at the Sugar Shack on 100 near Echo Lake.
The price has been out of sight for the last few years.
They had claimed a shortage a couple of years ago and the price just never dropped.

Yep. That $15 to $17 per quart is where I pull the trigger. I doubt you can find Vermont stuff at anything close to that price point.SnoBrdr wrote:Ocean State Job lot has the Canadian Grade A for $17 a quart.Geoff wrote:I usually buy Quebec maple syrup. Well now, I think we're due for some.Geoff wrote: Mr G likes the HFCS mini pecan pies I make from time to time. Haven't done those since the wine party.

Re: Maple Syrup
We've bought from many places: Green Mountain Sugar House, Sugarbush farms, Bushee Family, Mom & Pops, Cabot, Dakin, Bills, Mendon, Sugar & Spice and about 10 others. We actually found Maple Grove Farms maple syrup in Walmart in Rutland 3 or 4 years ago for $8 quart!
Bought a few for ourselves, family and friends. Never gonna find that again. Like Geoff, we usually look in the $15-17 range for a quart...

Re: Maple Syrup
BTW Most VT syrup is made from NY sap. Does that make it NY syrup?

Re: Maple Syrup
Typically purchase syrup at the Farmer's Market. Price is a touch more than Hannaford's, but not much.
I'm not really partial to where my syrup originated though.
