Max Vert Discussion

Post by shortski »

Riddle me this: your mission is to ski the most vertical at Killington in four consecutive hours, how much vertical do you think you could do and what combination of lifts and trails would you use.

I'll let you know after I Ski tomorrow what my lifts and trails were as well as time and vert, in the mean time discuss

Superstar laps. Preferably with good visibility, groomed superstar, low traffic, and fast skis.

Even though superstar isn't the fastest lift, everything else with a HSQ has too much cat track or runout.

Theoretical maximum is around 55k-60k ft of vert in 4 hours. Good luck.

+1 on superstar laps. Canyon might be second or maybe Needles quad?

What's the vert of SS 900-1000' make 10 runs in an hour ( 4 min lift 2 min run) 10k, good luck with keeping up that pace over 4 hrs. Wouldn't be my choice.

Trailmap says the vertical rise for Superstar Express is 1199ft, Canyon 1193ft.

Since you're looking for endurance and speed, grooming counts for a lot. OL is 800 feet shorter than the Canyon Quad and has the same vertical, but is fixed grip. Needles HSQ (970) and Superstar (1200) depends on who's smoothest. Rams Head, (1070) too long.

Midweek at Loon I can do 10,000+'/hr for 3 hours. Best day was 46,000'. That is 2 high speed quads stacked to yield about 2800' TTB per run.

Bear has SPQ with fast lift and a big groomer to the base. F'n boring, but you could get lots of vert off that chair in 4 hours. Fixed grips are too slow. Gondi give vert, but could create problems with lines, loading/ unloading.
biggest vert with the quad and easy fast travel has got to be SPQ. It also give you a couple of options like Wildfire vs. lower Bear Claw (Skye Burste).

Again to the point of the query, good luck sustaining 10 runs in an hour over 4 hours.

Skyepeak 1525ft vertical. Maybe that IS the route to take, as it might not completely wear ya out before the time is up. I know I definitely couldn't hold that pace on Superstar on my VERY BEST day... But, I think it would be possible for me to do it on Ramshead... so maybe I could continue for the entire 4 hrs versus having to quit after 2.5-3 hours on SS. Something about the "Tortise & The Hare" effect.

agree supe is the way to go. you get just under 1200 ft vertical in about 3400 ft trail length. spq gives more vertical per run but the shortest run back to the lift is over a mile (skye burst/wildfire). but even on supe don't think you can get more than 8 runs/hr which equals about 10k verts or 40k in 4 hrs. you'll lose time on the longish lift corral. maybe you can do 9 runs but to do 60k you'd have to average 12.5 runs/hr which even for the mighty hs is impossible.

In optimal conditions, it should be no problem to ski superstar from unload to load in around or under a minute, repeatedly.

Unload to headwall, skating: 5 seconds
Shush/GS/SG headwall @ ~45 mph: 5-10 seconds
SG/DH/straightline middle superstar @ 55-80 mph: 15-20 seconds
Shush/GS lower superstar @ ~35-40 mph: 15-20 seconds
Check speed and load lift with no line: 10 seconds

In a closed course scenario with DH skis, you could probably do it in 45 seconds.

I have not studied numbers.... but what about the summit express at Pico and laps on 49er? Thats a pretty fast lift and a long run that you can just make big GS turns down over and over on a good day...
