Snowmaking done

Post by shortski »

For all intents and purposes snowmaking is done for season, just went by skyship and three flatbeds with six compressors heading out of east mt road. Going to be a short season. 36 degrees and r*ining and fog.

No surprise. They'll do spot snowmaking through the February holiday week, possibly stockpile at the top of Superstar and Snowdon, then call it a season for snowmaking.

I just don't understand why you would want to limit your snowmaking options only halfway thru the season, especially with this years weather. Time for them to upgrade their snowmaking tech to more fan-guns, or something that they can afford to run longer during the season, for less money. Just like it doesn't make that much sense to blow snow so early (Oct-early Nov) that there is a pretty good chance that you are going to lose 75 percent or more of it. I realize everyone wants early season turns, but now if the weather turns off cold and snowmaking conditions greatly improve for the next 4-6 weeks the ability to do so is gone.

About half their air capacity is permanently installed. They won't be making snow in any marginal temps right now. Getting rid of the rental has little impact.

What's more important is they are (supposedly) down to a crew of 6 snowmakers.

This is just a rumor that snowmaking is done, correct?

Has there been any confirmation from Killington?

Well that's good to know, that they can still blow a large amount if they choose to. As far as manpower, if smaller crew is good and motivated, and they still have a few people they can call in if needed, they may yet be able to continue to provide decent skiing/riding.

If they are going to blow snow in temps under 20F, which only makes sense at this point, they should have no problems running a couple trails and 100+ guns, at least.

But will they? It seems they have had those windows recently and only chosen to build base on Skye Peak, as opposed to "freshening up" several slopes at a time.

The website says today that the snowmakers have the day off (not the rest of the year lol) due to the warm temps.

No idea if they intend to make snow on any of the 5 major expert trails that haven't seen snowmaking. I find it somewhat unlikely at this point, but who knows, maybe we'll see some light snowmaking on a couple of them.

I think the major thing we have to worry about right now is the upper half of Supestar. Notice that they made snow on the bottom half only? Top half is a bit thin IMHO....will they make snow on it?

Five? I believe they blew vertigo (briefly). By my count there are 4 trails not getting any love this year... Downdraft, Double Dipper, Ovation and Figgle.

3 month compressor rental. I think the compressors came in the last week of October. This appears to be preplanned before the season started.
