Superpipe - Yes or No?

Post by skibikeclimbguy »

From the conditions page:
The Timberline build begins on Wednesday ahead of an anticipated weekend opening and snowmaking in Dream Maker is setting the stage for the return of the superpipe.

Just remember the general public cannot handle 22" walls. A few snow plows to the wall really messes up the transition.

A half pipe with 14' walls would be nice for everyone to learn and enjoy and 150' long would see more activity.

The good part about a pipe is that it is a useful distraction for those that like that sort of thing. It's a place for those people to hang out. I have no problem with that. Keeps 'em off the rest of the mountain! However, I wish they'd build it in a way that is far more efficient with respect to the use of snow making. The "mold" is a joke; they should build a better framework so that it can be built with far less resources. Kinematic GPS could be used to precisely position the Zaugg within the mold. Something in the 18 to 20 foot range would be preferable to most. Pretty rare that I see someone actually get above the wall.

Would I rather they blew the Fiddle instead of the Superpipe? HELL YES.

Should've moved the pipe to the right of Superstar so it would get viewed from the RUB, and snow could be reclaimed in the spring, not just be wasted melt after Bear closes in the spring.

Yeah that sounds interesting....someone must have some reason not to do this....what is it?

might be a great idea...bring performers to a spot with an audience?

That's a damn good idea... Skiers right on the other side of the pipes where the slide used to be.

I think the marketing idea was to make bear the extreme play ground.

Some closed circuit TV and big screens would go good with that.

According to the website, pipe is 18 feet?
Pipe Stats
•18' walls
•350' length
•Regularly cut by a Zaugg Pipe Cutter

Probably wouldn't get much argument from anyone here on that... Realistically, how many days do they need to blow on the Fiddle vs. how long they have to blow to build Dreamaker/The Pipe ???

They've got the Stash built, blew a few days on OL, should've slid right over and blew on The Fiddle...

They enlarged the trench for the Dew Tour's 22' pipe. The rope tow was eliminated. AFAIK, they have not shrunk it back down. Going to take a LOT of snow.

I doubt there is anywhere near enough room skiers left of lower SS to put in a pipe. It needs some runout room. It would be an entertaining train wreck though...

Blow a ton of snow on mid superstar and make the whole mid section a pipe. The snow can be used for spring season.

Lets not get overly dramatic here. A 350' pipe is going to take about 20 acre feet of snow to build. That's less than 1/100th of Killington's snowmaking output for the year. The form is only a rough shape in any case, it is a v-shape which keeps the snow from moving and slightly reduces the volume used. Before widening, I recall the old 18' superpipe at Killington was too narrow, so some extra width will help. There were only fourteen superpipes globally last winter - there is no way Killington is going to build a 22' pipe if they don't have any national or international level comps scheduled!
