Help me properly describe Killy on my site

Post by PowderDave »

Hi all. I am working on a new page on my travel website to focus on all the key mountain stats I care about. It started as a chart for myself when I was trying to decide between the Epic and Ikon for next year, but decided to post it for everyone. Of course, Killy is on the list so I though I would get some additional opinions for all of you if I captured its essence. Killy was my home mountain about a decade ago (was even a Survey Ambassador for a year), but haven't been going as much since I started a family. As such, some of my opinion may be dated. That's where you guys come in. Also, if you see anything else that I got wrong, do let me know.

Note that my site and I am focused on deals and using points and the like so some of my focus is on points hotels that can be used for free stays. I am not aware of any of the major chains in the Killington area, but let me know if I missed one. Note that I know there are airports in VT, I just don't think many people fly to New England mountains so ignore that for New England.

Mountain: Killington & Pico
Region: New England
Acres: 1,509 & 468
Base Altitude: 1,165 & 2,000
Ikon Pass Days: 7
Ikon Base Pass Days: 5 (Subject to Black Outs)
Local Airport: N/A
Hotel Programs: N/A

Killington (Vermont) - (1,509 acres) is a major mountain in the east less than a 3 hour drive from Boston. Note that their acreage count is "boundary to boundary" so take it with a bit of a grain of salt if you are a front country skier. I have certainly spent more days skiing here than any other mountain. It has lots of varied terrain and is known for evening options on its access road. While it can get fairly crowded, it isn't too hard to strategically choose lifts and singles lines to mitigate them. I wouldn't call it very family friendly (lots of separate drive-up bases, party culture, expensive for New England) and some would say that it isn't so friendly in general (probably due to its relatively large size and more corporate style management than some area mountains), but has a good amount of terrain for those that love to ski. And bonus points for having somewhat recently changed their policy to officially allow skiing off piste for those that know what they are doing. No point hotel options on mountain and hotel and condo options are more than most of the ME and NH mountains. However, if you are young enough (in age or at heart), guest at a friend's ski share on the couch for short money.

Pico (Vermont) - Pico (468 acres) is not otherwise noteworthy except that it is adjacent to Killington. Getting much less traffic than Killington, Pico will keep the fresh powder a bit longer, making it a good place to visit a day or two after a dump. Also a great place for a family with little ones learning to ski.

Note that it will be posted here: freetravelgenius.com/skiing/

Thanks!

Pico is just shy of 2000 vertical feet (and doesn't lie about it), has two detachable quads, lots of history, and 4 distinct trail pods. It's only NOT so notable because it's next to Killington.

If you count gnomes knoll there are 5 distinct pods.

There are brand name hotels a short drive away in Rutland for using Hilton points etc

Happy Fourth! Good info and useful Web site.

You have an imbalance of depth of info. and provide more depth on lodging to Western resorts, less info. On the East and Killington. Some possible additions for Killington / Rutland/ White River/Ludlow:

Killington : Chase Rewards can be used at Hillside Inn, NorthStar and other places.
Rutland/Mendon- only 20-30 min drive to Killington (comparable drive to some Western hotels you listed) Chase Rewards can be used at the Best Westerns and other establishments. Hampton Inn (Hilton Hhonors) and Holiday Inn Express in Rutland
White River/ Lebanon NH - Marriott and Holiday Inn and other places which can be booked using Chase Rewards. Only 20-30 min drive to Killington
Ludlow - 10 min to Okemo, 30-40min to Killington. Best western and other places can be booked using Chase Rewards.

Killington - It’s got more bumps and steeps than your six pack

Stratton - It’s flatter than your baby sister

Thanks all, especially @boston_e and @GlacierBoy for calling me out on excluding Rutland hotels when I included hotels further away from other mountains. I included the Rutland hotels but still can't imagine staying at one vs paying cash/Chase on the access road or close to it. I also added some chase options on the access road and beefed up info about Okemo and gave more props to Pico.

Changes have been posted to https://freetravelgenius.com/skiing/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; along with adding in the new mountains from the Vail / Peak merger.

Further suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks.
