Mashed potato Thursday

Not sure what ski area you were at, but at 9:00 cascade and superstar were closed to do to boiler plate ice.
Finally opened them around 1:00 The peak never saw spring conditions.

Out with SND and the 802 crew 9-3:30. Group got up to about 18 people at times and managed to stay together.

Super day (except for the peak) on dreamaker, vertigo, needles. Some minor woods shots that ronzoni led us thru.

First time I did the vertigo headawall all year. Pizza bus stop for lunch.

Tomorrow should be interesting. Off to the KPAA gathering.

Nice on the scene reporting Rusty K. my beloved and local mohawk mtn hanging in there but looking like a super shortened
season. people think i'm nuts for not loving this warm weather. :(

Similar at Sunday River today. chatterroy at the opening bell, lifts on wind hold due to wind at elevation and nothing at the bottom. if the snow surface didn't see the sun it was frozen. Hard to believe since the temperature when we pulled into the parking lot this morning was 47.

They have 33,000 CFM of electric air still they'll be alright.

East facing trails were fine. North facing not so much. Killington’s variety of exposures and elevations is an underrated asset.

heard some trails on supe pod were also closed early.

pico thursday for my krewe. exceeded expectations. 10-3ish shift. lower mtn nice & soft. did take a while for the upper mtn to thaw but things softened nicely. 49'er skied very well. certainly spring-like but no mashed potatoes or mank. summit glade being as narrow as it is gets skied off was not good. that 3'' provided a creamy surface in birch glade. surprise of the day was the outpost trails. w/o the lift, they don't get trashed. in much better shape than the nats at K. small soft bumps. b-slope skied well. first time skiing the "new" a-slope. prefered it on nat snow. now with the new snowmaking, it's just another groomer but admittedly it skied well.

Went to Pico mid afternoon for ski bum. Skied Upper KA just before 3pm. It did not soften. At all. Narrow trail, well shaded. That’s on me. Lower elevations were better.

correct upper a-slope has no snowmaking and was unskiable today. what they did was widen (i think) and put snowmaking on a-slope cut-off which winds aound upper a-slope and joins in just below that upper, steep section with the snowmaking continueing all the way to bottom. here's the blurb:

The project includes 2,800 feet of air and water pipe, and 45 hydrants on A Slope trail. It was completed in October 2022, in time for the 2022/23 season. The project represents a $440,000 capital investment in the facility, including a $125,000 donation from POWDR and Killington Resort and fundraising from the PSEF Foundation to cover the remaining costs.

“Having snow making on A Slope will benefit the Pico Race Program by allowing multiple age groups to train simultaneously as well as creating a more consistent and longer lasting surface over the course of the season,” says PSEF President Nate Freund. “It will also allow the Program to host a race on B Slope and still be able to train on A Slope at the same time, which historically was rarely possible without consistent natural snow.”

Yes that sounds right. I believe they lowered the exit of the Cutoff down A Slope somewhat too to come out on less pitch.

Middle Skyelark in the morning was probably the worst I have ever seen it. An absolute skating rink.

Conditions were certainly variable over the course of the day and across the mountain. Cruise control was probably the softest of the morning. At 2:30 mid Supe was skiable, but it was certainly not soft.

Calling it a "mashed potato day" is quite a stretch.
