4/1 actual report

:barebutt: :barebutt:

mama nature couldn't have played a crueler april's fool joke, only it was no joke. one of those why bother, take one for the team days. easily made the bottom 5 days of the season - maybe a contender for worst. on the bright side, just a beautiful azure sky with only an occasional wisp passing by. perhaps the lightest turnout i've seen.

did the hatter/hafskitm shift. at bear deep mush was the rule. upper claw was actually good then the lower section by the shorty exit was rock hard. lower burst was mush as was lower WF. upper burst was ok. stash (ungroomed) mostly frozen trax with the occasional patch of really nice corn. it was closed on my return. shorty variable.

needles lift being down saved me from myself. bitter had a couple significant ice floes. the one on the lower steep extended nearly edge-to-edge with narrow passage on either side. a surprisingly open low road was a hard pass. upper lark very firm. middle ok. supe was open from launch pad to high rd. looked rather frozen. lower a war zone between extended ice flows and bare spots.

upper mouse ok. trap cookies on a frozen base with lower chute more soup. NR might have been the best. mid winter firm & fast though lower rime not good. LEF was ok but by late afternoon felt like the chop was setting up. rotd - spillway. that says it all.

mtn dealt a terrible hand. 50's yesterday with a flash freeze this morning. they have their work cut out.

I guess I am a glass half full kind of guy. I was not expecting much, and thought things were better than feared. Mid morning at Bear was actually good, as you caught the frozen stuff softening. I never have been a fan of Upper Skyeburst, but hitting it and lower Wildfire at just the right time produced the best surfaces of the day. Worth several repeats. Afternoon was more of a mixed bag with some places in the Canyon still rock hard and others like lower Snowdon and Rams Head sloppy.

Afternoon Report: Questioning if my friend SA really skied the 'Hatter/Hafski" shift !

Agree with others that lower Bear sucked in afternoon. So, went elsewhere.

Cruise Control very good. PIA skiing Needle's Eye area with the NE quad down, but served up most of the best skiing. Middle / Lower Needle's Eye good and really good on the lower half with some corn pow off the beaten path. Did not do Panic Button; heard from some other that did; not good. Gary's Fun Run also quite good [Bitter -> High Road].

Off Supe, Mid Supe FAST. Lower Skyelark closed. Lower Bittersweet OK. Late Day Low Road was excellent; just softened up enough.

Did several combos of above runs plus one decent one down Snowshed.

ROTD: Late day Pipe Dream.

Heard others were skiing Fiddle today.
Goes to show, you don't never know
Watch each card you play, and play it slow
Don't you let that deal go down

SA - Better than I thought! Wasn't sure if you had the discipline to wait until 1:00 !

So, you only missed the second half of the power hour. Admittedly, that's also when things can be re-freezing.

So - Well Done. Butt maybe not the best trail choices !

really?! i eyeballed OL and decided it wasnt worth the risk. if dreammaker was closed i couldnt imagine anything ungroomed would be good.

did a few laps before work, all at bear. ROTD: jumping the rope into the bottom of dreammaker and making deep creamy turns in sun baked corduroy. WROTD: just looking at superstar while going up the lift. heartbreaking to see.
