All in favor of taxing carbon and wrecking our nation's economy in order to kill off Ski Fetish's plants, please raise your hand.
Personally, I'm a skeptic when it comes to global climate change and I certainly don't believe for an instant that today's warmer than average temperature has anything to do with it inasmuch as we also have colder than average temperatures in other parts of the country and the globe simultaneously. On the other hand, I am not so skeptical as to believe that man, whether through the burning of fossil fuels or through the simple fact that there are 6.5 billion of us versus 2-3 billion not that long ago, cannot have any impact on climate. I do believe we should start increasing gasoline taxes and immediately create a floor price under gasoline of at least $3 per gallon, and use the increase in revenue to lower Social Security and Medicare taxes. I also believe we should begin to build nuclear plants again. For those who want renewable energy to gain ground, I suggest building the Cape Wind project immediately, and begin to add wind turbines to suitable locations throughout New England, including places in Vermont where so-called environmentalists have shot those projects down. We need to increase drilling for natural gas offshore and in Alaska, and open up more sections of the Rockies for natural gas development, all in order to offset the use of coal and oil for electric generation.
Now, how did this thread turn from the selectboard to global warming?
Sorry, just got pissed off. The majority of what one reads on this board are complaints about a company that finally released us from the hell of ASC. I appreciated the intellectual voice of reason in ncholcomb's post - propose some creative alternatives in lieu of all the incessant complaining. Doc No's post was typical of these complaints with no alternatives - and I just had to rattle off a rant.
Let's give Powdr and SP Land a chance. Quit all the bitching about a shorter season. Given the weather, global warming, a cycle, or not - you can't make snow in this kind of weather.
dude i liked u better before this post

previous behavior is indicative of future behavior i.e. mt bachelor

btw, april & may r two of the best months for skiing....

Thats fine, I'm willing to give them a chance about the season length, after all, if there are lots of dumps in march and april, I'm optimistic they'll extend it.
BUT, some of the policy changes they've done have affected people WAY beyond "give them a chance" - killing bond passes, and childrens programs prices to name just 2. There's no "give them a chance" involved there, whats done is done. So raniting in certain circumstances is more than deserved.

Ah, you can well imagine that I think about all the complainers whose bond passes are drying up. Get over it. Children's programs? I grant you that. It's important to families, to the industry, for lots of reasons, but honoring lifetime passes of a defunct company? Killington was bought. The new owners do not have to honor lifetime passes for good will or anything else and shouldn't be expected to. Give me a break -party is over.
$hit happens. They put the money down. They want to turn this area around and make it profitable. They don't owe previous lifetime pass holders anything. There is no argument. They need to make some tough financial calls. Good will? This place will fill up with a new crop of devotees if the weather cooperates. Operative word: WEATHER.

POWDR screwed skiers and employees as soon as they started with Killington. ASC never did that, they took the money and ran. but they never screwed the loyal people on the mountain, including employees.
POWDR deserves nothing, no time, no slides nothing. They screwed us, the people that made Killington work and everything else. They mislead and Lie about dam near everything they are doing, have done and will do. Send them back to Utah with the ASC a-holes.

You're allowed your opinion, same as I'm allowed mine. We'll agree to disagree.

Ah, but...the mountain already makes a large profit (8-14 million the past few years).
They don't owe previous lifetime pass holders anything.
Without them, the area wouldn't exist. Screwing the people who helped make this area, and who actually put money into creating it, will come back to haunt them in my opinion.
Good will?
Is damn important, I can't think of many businesses that can survive by pissing off their customers...especially in an industry like this one, where the vast majority have nothing stopping them from leaving and going somewhere else, except their loyalty to the resort.
This place will fill up with a new crop of devotees if the weather cooperates.
Why's that? The weather doesn't just hit here, and other resorts offer more for less money.

I have no problem with Killington trying to make a profit. I have no problem with them trying to maximize profits. However, I think they are fundamentally wrong in how they are going about it, and as a result will fail. You cannot just change your brand, and giving up skiers visits to do so is bad business. Like it or not, it's a zero sum game these days (4.1 M if you're counting). The skiers that leave will enhance the profits of other areas, which will not stand still. The argument that they are just getting rid of the "bottom feeders" just doesn't hold up. Certainly the increase in pass price may have that effect, but the shortening of the season does exactly the opposite. They are giving up on the most dedicated part of the market segment. In any area there is a core group that has a disproportionate effect on what the rest of the market does, and have a significant multiplier effect. Win them, win the market. That is the group Killington has alienated, and that is insane. The new Killington? The new Coke of branding.

I ain't got nothin' against nobody trying to make a decent
living
It ain't the money that's the issue
Only if that's the reason why these cats ain't makin' decent
music
That's when I got beef wit' you
And I'm a bring it to you like never
Go ahead, call me player-hater if it make you feel better
Try to jump my crew if you cats feel foggy
You need to wake up, and smell the damn coffee
