The military gets plenty of money. I'm just not sure they're spending it on the right things. Congress treats the defense budget as if it's a job creation program. We get equipment the military doesn't want because Congress continues to fund it for the jobs those programs create. Meanwhile, cuts are made elsewhere in stuff that soldiers need to survive. The F-35, however great it might be, has been one massive cost overrun with the development risk put on the government rather than shared with the contractors under their "cost plus" contracts and that's only the largest of many such debacles.

So, how big are the current cuts? Historically speaking, they’re incredibly large. In 2011, the defense budget represented 4.7% of total gross domestic product; this year’s percentage will be 2.7%. In real dollars, US defense spending is set to plummet from $705.6 in 2011 billion to $496 billion. That represents a budget cut of approximately 30%.
Overall, major defense cuts come with a serious price: the price of emboldened enemies. Unfortunately, the cuts contemplated by Chuck Hagel and company have already borne fruit in an emboldened China in the South China Sea, a resurgent Vladimir Putin-led Russia, an aggressively Islamist Middle East. The problem with military cuts is not merely that they decrease American capacity to make war, though they surely do. The problem is that purposeful and large-scale military decreases send a message to the rest of the world that America is in retreat.

Sadly, under the Obama administration, that signal is both clear and correctly interpreted.

not going to disagree w the effectiveness of the current spending, much is squandered, but that's always been the case...you have to fund the real world military as it exists not as it would exist in an ideal world...

"Our military spends too much" is not consistent with "Let's help with the crisis in _______ " (fill in one of dozens of countries). The military's budget includes the cost of being the world's policeman and the world's search and rescue, and the world's disaster relief.

The bigger question is why don't other countries spend more? Then we could spend less.

unfortunately the clown prince is going about that with an @ssbackwards methodology-- cut our spending and presence to create a vacuum that others may step in and fill , too bad he doesn;t seem to have thought of what that vacuum will be filled with, or perhaps he has...

I'm not going to link it here as nobody has time for that BUT as I watched it I couldn't help but think , ISIS is pissed that Obama has lost control of the Middle East to Putin and Putin is going to wipe them out !

[quote="Mister Moose] Gotta agree with XJ there. I see a lot of cross jewelry worn, usually necklaces on women. Or stars of David. None were dangerous, and I somehow doubt it conflicted with their being american. I do have to wonder how a woman functions in a burqa in certain situations here in the US: How does she do anything for which a photo ID is required? How is she processed if arrested? And then we have Kim Davis, not a Muslim, who puts her religion above (one of) her country's laws. Even the US Marines say, "God, Country, Corp" They place God first, but they accept the Marine Corps Regulations.

While the Bible instructs stoning for adultery (Deuteronomy 22:13-29), or preaching a different religion (Deuteronomy 13:6-11), or a half dozen other offenses, I don't see Christians doing this. There is a recognition in Christianity and Judaism of modern criminal law. This is the fundamental difference: The only religion that is on the radar screen currently that does not recognize modern criminal law and justifies killing for religious reasons is the extremist branches (and there are many branches) of the Muslim faith. No other group, person, or faith has accumulated the track record shown below, and this is a partial list:
