it's great if you don't give a frack about the environment of your drinking water.
Stop driving your car, turn off the lights and move South so you don't have to heat our home! Cooking can be done on a fire outside.
Watch this Dr. Dumbass. You'll be thrilled. You can cook with the flammable water coming out of your faucet.

Yeah, but... but... but... but... we're now "swimming in natural gas"! And we're not paying terrorists! And you wouldn't believe the money I've made off of my natural gas investments!

Buncha Nervous Nellies... so what if fracking destroys the groundwater supply? That's what bottled water is for, right? Problem solved!

I haven't seen the film yet (just trailers for it) but John Hanger is a pretty strong environmental advocate in PA so, if he says the film is "fundamentally dishonest" you ought to take his criticism seriously.

Pa. DEP chief lashes out at 'Gasland' director

PHILADELPHIA (The Associated Press) - Jun 24

Pennsylvania's top environmental official says the director of an award-winning documentary about drilling in the Marcellus Shale region is a "propagandist" whose film is "fundamentally dishonest."

Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger says the movie by Josh Fox is a "deliberately false presentation for dramatic effect."

Fox's film, "Gasland," portrays the gas industry as exploiting loopholes to inject toxins in the ground, among other dangerous activities.

In the movie, Fox challenges Hanger to drink a bottle of what he says is water polluted by drilling. Hanger declines.

Fox says Hanger is being dishonest himself by portraying Marcellus Shale drilling as anything but a disaster.

Accolades for "Gasland" include a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Apparently, John Hanger ends up looking pretty bad in this film. If I was him, I'd preemptively attack the filmmaker, too:

Watched Gasland the other night. Given the choice between a young film maker or an industry with billions of dollars to gain I have a hard time believing that the natural gas industry is being 100% honest. Reminds me of big tobacco insisting that cigarettes to not cause cancer or numerous other examples of a large industry putting profit ahead of anything else. If I remember correctly, Hanger's stance was that in the four cases in his area that were shown to have water contamination, those homes were having clean water provided to them. That was an acceptable solution in his book - it's ok to contaminate the environment as long as water can be trucked in so no one drinks it. Perhaps as part of the Dept of Environmental Protection, his concern should be protecting the environment in the first place.

What does pretty strong mean?

I would think a "pretty strong environmental advocate in PA" would be up in arms about the destruction of a town by some motherfrackers from Texas.

Bio from PA DEP website:
John Hanger
Secretary, Department of Environmental Protection

John Hanger is the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. As Secretary, Mr. Hanger manages an agency of 2,760 employees with a mission to protect Pennsylvania’s air, land and water from pollution and provide for the health and safety of its citizens through a cleaner environment, working as partners with individuals, organizations, governments and business to prevent pollution and restore natural resources.

Mr. Hanger is responsible for overseeing the development of a balanced ecological system through the protection of Pennsylvania’s environmental resources and assisting the regulated community and public in complying with environmental laws and regulations through a variety of technical assistance and outreach programs. He is also responsible for making all policy and resource allocation decisions, as well as representing the department before the legislature, the general public and those affected by any departmental actions

Mr. Hanger chairs the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, the Environmental Quality Board, and the Appalachian States Low Level Radioactive Waste Commission. In addition, Mr. Hanger is the Vice-Chairperson of PennVest and a member of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission.

From June 1998 to August 2008, Mr. Hanger was president and CEO of Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture). Mr. Hanger was particularly involved with PennFuture's work to promote renewable energy and energy conservation.

Mr. Hanger played a major role in drafting and enacting in November 2004 Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act; the Growing Greener II $645 million environmental bond issue in 2005; the 2008 Act I $650 million Alternative Energy Fund; Act 129 Energy Efficiency and Smart Metering law; Act 70 Climate Change Action Plan; Pennsylvania’s Biodiesel and Advance Cellulosic Mandate Act; and the $800 million Water and Sewer Investment Act known as H2O.

From April 1993 to June 1998, Mr. Hanger was a commissioner with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), where he served on the Electricity Committee, the Consumer Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). He advocated for policies that allow consumers to choose their electric, gas and telephone companies; that assist low-income families; and those that benefit the environment, such as net metering, energy conservation, and renewable energy. He is the architect of Pennsylvania’s 1996 Electricity Generation and Customer Choice Act.

As an expert on energy and environmental issues, public utility regulation, and competition in the electricity, gas and telephone industries, Mr. Hanger has testified before the United States Congress and many state legislatures. He has authored numerous articles, written leading regulatory decisions and lectured widely to diverse audiences.

Prior to becoming PUC commissioner, Mr. Hanger served as legal counsel to Commissioner Joseph Rhodes from 1988 to 1993. From 1984 to 1988 he worked at Community Legal Services, Inc. of Philadelphia, serving as public advocate representing 500,000 municipal customers of the City of Philadelphia's municipal gas, water, and sewer utilities.

Mr. Hanger is a 1979 graduate of Duke University and a 1984 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

Mr. Hanger's past seems to make his present all the most disappointing, no?

Depends if you accept the film at face value or believe Hanger's comment about the film's accuracy.

Pardon my skepticism, but when a public figure who comes off looking bad in a documentary blasts the film as "fundamentally dishonest" and "deliberately false" -- and then has nothing else to add (no specifics, no examples, no reasons for his claims, other than hurt feelings and/or personal and professional embarrassment) -- I tend to dismiss his comments as nothing more than typical boilerplate CYA soundbites.

I haven't seen the film yet so I can't comment one way or the other.
