riding gloves are a must with MTB. You can get by without them on a road bike, but not when you are trail riding.

Good to hear this was a good time.

Riding gloves only offer a small help at K. It's just a part of lift served riding because you're doing a lot of braking.

the gloves do very little to prevent or alleviate death grip, they do however help prevent abrasion in the event of a dismount...relaxing and having a firm but not overly tight grip is the key there...think of your car, you allow the wheel some "wander" vs keeping it absolutely still....same w your bike...
