Quality is relative - I remember skiing OL in the eighties - way before improved gear - and took the old Sky Peak Quad in -75 wind chill .... headed back to ski house after that - that was not quality!!madhatter wrote:Bubba wrote:I've spent enough days skiing at -20 to -30 below. With improved clothing and gear, skiing in cold weather can be quality, not necessarily quantity!!!!

Fiddle and OL under the guns last week was quality no matter the air temps. Never let pain dictate your life. Get some!

Absolutely agree. Quality is relative. It's also personal. I don't consider the need to wear five or six layers to avoid suffering and frostbite to provide a quality experience. For those that find that enjoyable, have at it. When it's that cold out, I can find other ways to enjoy myself.MrsG wrote:Quality is relative - I remember skiing OL in the eighties - way before improved gear - and took the old Sky Peak Quad in -75 wind chill .... headed back to ski house after that - that was not quality!!madhatter wrote:Bubba wrote:I've spent enough days skiing at -20 to -30 below. Passed on Thursday with the high winds and numerous lift closures (went hiking instead), but was good to go Friday thru Sunday. Not for everyone, but I enjoyed the great snow and lack of folks on the steeper trails.

No Fiddle and (OL under the guns). Kinda like when I bought a cedar post and rail fence and the rails were Pine.skiadikt wrote:fiddle under the guns?Woodsrider wrote:Fiddle and OL under the guns last week was quality no matter the air temps. Never let pain dictate your life. Get some!

Black Diamond Gortex Pro shell, Mountain Hardware Ghost Wisperer down midlayer, north face ski shirt and an under armor cold gear base layer for the top. AK Gortex 2L shell pants (2L is warmer than 3L because it breaths less), Hot Chilly fleece base layer on top of Under armor cold gear tights. Warm yet breaths, not bulky and uncomfortable at all. Quite cozy in fact. When it gets really, really cold I swap my Ghost Whisperer for my Scott down midlayer which has a hood and I wear the down hood under my helmet instead of a skull cap. Can’t hear worth sh*t but I stay warm in deep negative double digits. For skinning I use my 3L Gortex Pro pants and stow the puffy jacket on the way up or just unzip.Bubba wrote:Absolutely agree. Changes with age and life style. Learned to ski in Wyoming and skied in cotton thermals and AF coverings, Genes, flight jacket and leather gloves. Worked out fine for me, even below zero. Graduate to Killington and the East, upgraded to thermals, a turtle neck, sweater and wind breaker until it went below zero. Forward to 5 or so years ago, I can't stand the cold. Layer after Layer, boots are cold and fingers freeze up quickly. Sucks to get old and expect to ski the way you used to.

If I had to go from 3 layers to 4, then I'd be thinking it was time for shorts and a t-shirt, and some flip-flops for a few days somewhere warmer, until the temps moderate some!
Re: i'm a wuss
New rule, if GIS wears pants then the you will have no lift lines on the chairs and some days even the gondola.

You skied in Genes? And a flight jacket? What a hoot Maverick! Iceman was right; you are dangerous.Dr. NO wrote:Changes with age and life style. Well, it was in the 70's and most of the stuff wasn't much better in those days. Nit pants and wool sweaters didn't provide much better protection from the cold.Humpty Dumpty wrote:You skied in Genes? And a flight jacket? What a hoot Maverick!
