Forget about panic (in reference to the thread title), how about giving a f*** or two about your fellow humans?

Blame whoever the f*** you want, but at this rate I’ve come to the conclusion this nation is a bunch of softees whining about “muh freedumbs” and complaining of “Covid fatigue” after only 9 months. WWII lasted for 6 years. The Great Depression lasted for about 10 years. The 1918 flu pandemic lasted for 2 years.

You f*** can’t sit on your couch with 200+ channels? How about all the information in the world in your hand? Nope! Spoiled little brats.

Not that it’ll ever happen, but what percentage of the population do we need to lose before people take this seriously?!?!? 10%? 20%?

UK becomes first country to approve Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine, first shots roll out next week
By Emma Reynolds and Lindsay Isaac, CNN

London (CNN)The United Kingdom has become the first Western nation to approve a Covid-19 vaccine, a landmark moment in the coronavirus pandemic that paves the way for the first doses to be rolled out across the country next week.

"Help is on the way," Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced Wednesday morning, after UK regulators granted emergency authorization for a vaccine made by US pharma giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.

A final analysis of the Phase 3 trial of Pfizer's vaccine shows it was 95% effective in preventing infections, even in older adults, and caused no serious safety concerns, the company said last month.

The announcement means the UK has vaulted past the United States and European Union in the race to approve a vaccine, months into a pandemic that has killed almost 1.5 million people worldwide. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla hailed the emergency authorization as "a historic moment in the fight against Covid-19."

The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine -- enough to vaccinate 20 million people. Hancock told the BBC that an initial 800,000 doses would be available in the UK next week, and "we'll then deploy it at the speed that it's manufactured" by Pfizer at its facilities in Belgium. The bulk of the rollout will come next year.

Elderly people in care homes, along with health workers and other vulnerable people, will be top of the priority list.
In a statement, the health department said the approval "follows months of rigorous clinical trials and a thorough analysis of the data by experts at the [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)] who have concluded that the vaccine has met its strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.

"The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will shortly publish its latest advice for the priority groups to receive the vaccine, including care home residents, health and care staff, the elderly and the clinically extremely vulnerable."
Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the news as "fantastic" in a tweet, adding that "it's the protection of vaccines that will ultimately allow us to reclaim our lives and get the economy moving again."

Thanks for the well wishes. Thankfully, my mom is doing OK physically. Emotionally, not so good as she'd been with her boyfriend for about 8 years. I'm confident she'll heal emotionally as she previously lost her second husband (20+ year relationship).

Sweden tried to achieve herd immunity through no lockdowns, restrictions or masking. Last week, they hit 7,000 deaths. Denmark, Finland and Norway, all similar-sized countries who instituted safety measures, have just 878, 415 and 354. Herd immunity failed

2nd mask mandate? haven't masks been mandated the entire time?

In any event, the explanation is simple. During the summer everyone was going outside and better able to social distance. In the winter, more people are inside breathing the same air as one another, and that is the principle way this thing spreads. That's what all the authorities have been saying for a long time - during the fall and into winter, we'd have a spike as more people were going to be inside. This is the same reason flu season starts in the Fall and usually ends in the Spring. The really big spike at the end of November and into December is obviously due to family get togethers over thanksgiving. It will get worse as more gather for Christmas.

edit: ah, I see. there was another mandate on 11/6. That seems unnecessary at this point, but I see why he did it. People have been advised to wear masks since like March. Mandating it probably didn't result in much more compliance than you were already seeing, which was quite high from what I could tell. But the spike in numbers requires politicians to look like they're doing something.

- People are choosing to not wear masks.
- People are choosing to gather in groups indoors.
- Masks are not magic.

Quick example ... in my county, within Pennsylvania, we allow a max of ten (10) people to be seated at a table for indoor dining. They can remove their masks while dining. Following this example the attendees have a 25% chance of contracting COVID. My count also permits indoor gathering up to 500 people so long as the venue has a maximum occupancy of 10,000. At an event with 500 people, without distancing, you're basically guaranteed COVID-19.

I went to Costco and Wawa yesterday. Saw several without masks or masks that were not properly worn.

So what you are saying is there is a chance mask mandates don't work?

Wearing masks works. Mask mandates are a mixed bag, mainly because the USA appears to have the highest percentage of ignorance per capita when it comes to science.
