Just a question
What East Coast mountain is going to step in to "fill the void" in season length left by Killington abdicating the throne?
IF nobody else on the East Coast steps up to fill the void and offer early and late season skiing, what then?
will you travel west or just deal with the shorter season out here?

Nobody really needs to step up to fill the void, because other mountains already stay open till the end of April, and some last year into May too. So other mountains will be open weeks later then Killington already... nobody needs to step it up to accomplish anything, they will just do what they always do and come out on top.

You have just summed up perfectly why Killington will not stay open late this spring. For new owners of a financially struggling company to continue to operate late into the spring and continue to pay its operating expenses with little hope of generating any significant additional revenue would be stupid.
You just made their case.

As an aside, I think it's been said here that Killington has actually operated under a profit each year, but ASC's debt and other resorts ate up all the profit K generated.
There was a $73,000 profit for fy 2006 before any debt was paid. That does include depreciation of assets and amortization which added up to $8.1 million, which the amount that is deprecation they didn't actually lose, but the assets are worth that much less, which would mean that much more in capital, although no one can say how much of that $8.1 million was only depreciation and is actaully cold hard cash . After debt was taken care of they lost over $5.9 million for fy 2006. For just the fist half of fy 2007 they had already lost $8.7 million compared to the $5.2 million lost the first half of fy 2006.

UMMM. We drive several hours to ski superstar late in the season. We buy passes to Killington with the idea that we will get to ski there after most places close because it happens to be the most convenient late closing mounatin for us.
Apparently we bought passes to the wrong mountain. We won't make that mistake again.
HMMMM. Let's see... The mountain does not want to stay open because only season pass holders show up. Pass holders won't buy passes if the mountain won't stay open late. Does the mountain care about selling passes?
They are delusional if they think less season passes mean more day passes. We don't pay full price to ski any mountain. We just won't go there at all.
If we have to go somewhere else to ski after K closes this year it will be the last year we have season passes to K.

They told you exactly what to expect for season length before passes even went on sale... if you bought anyway thinking that they would actually stay open later, you are probably wrong, and now have specific opening and closing dates. They must be making enough with their pass sales to be able to decide that they would rather sacrifice some season pass sales by shortening the season, rather then getting some more sales, but have to spend a fortune to be able to stay open several weeks longer. And maybe if you stop buying passes you wont return and buy any day tickets, but most people here that have said they aren't buying passes this year, have said they will still have day trips to Killington. The drastic amount of people that will no longer be skiing Killington much, will make for better conditions, no liftlines, and overall a better ski experiance. That will make for a lot more day tripping and vacationers come back a lot more often in the season. When some previous season pass buyers swing by Killington for a day of fun, will find things much improved, and may very well buy season passes again. This will make for more and more revenue, and will eventually add demand for a longer season, more new terrain, more terrain opening quicker and staying open longer. I think... If theres money to be made they will stay open longer, after this season of course, this season is just a test, and changes will be made for how things go financially.

OK smarty pants....I wrote my letter yesturday as soon as i saw this topic on K-zone and followed the link to Killington's web site. I wrote to the Info E-mail adress where the published open-closed dates were. I'll let you know if I get a response.
