Advantage Maine!
Good for those in the Boston area but definitely too long a drive from the NYC metro area.

Sunday River is a very large intermediate mountain. After White Hype and Shock Wave, there isn't much to challenge. Comparisons between the Heat and OL are just plain ridiculous, OL is springtime bumps in front of Bear Mt. Lodge, White Heat is cold and desolate. Totally different experiences. I've seen the Chondola (it's beautiful), but not ridden it (I was up there before it opened), however my daughter and her college buddies who ski there often all hate it: It ends up putting goobs all over the resort, instead of keeping them confined to South Ridge. That said, SR's snowmaking is exceptional, as is their grooming. Boyne does a good job; they know their market, the locals love them, as do the (second) home owners. No Yankees fans is certainly a plus  . I occasionally read the SR board, but because it is mountain moderated, find it pretty dull. The Foggy Goggle is a great place for an apres Beer, better than any Killington offering, but overall, the nightlife is pretty dull. The massive amount of condo development in the last few years has resulted in it becoming far more crowded than it use to be, in fact more so than Killington now. The woods at Oz are cool, but too often unskiable, either due to lack of snowfall, or because their storms often tail off into r*in, leaving an unmanageable crust.

Additional note: Today's SR homepage (http://www.sundayriver.com) suggests that SR got 10"-15", and that Killington got 4" to 8", not the 15" reported on K's site. Really lame. FWIW, I've found K's reported totals to be spot on, no complaints there.

man, this is a great thread. Much more than I ever expected. Thanks for all the great replies.

Bottom line as to what I got out of this thread: I definitely wanna get over to SR someday soon to check it out. Might not be this season, but within the next few. Thanks so much for all your thoughts. Keep 'em comin.

Not everyone at the Loaf loves the Sox, and there are many YANKEE fans up there, including myself at times.

As someone who has a pass to both (college pass) I have to say that I am, on the whole, more in favor with those who side with Killington. Although Sunday River has some great terrain, Killington on the whole offers more options especially in terms of woods. Sunday River's terrain is also at greater threat to the elements but because of that I think they try harder to maintain it -- though lately I'd say they're not doing a great job.

Plus the Chondola is an absolute nightmare. My other friends who have passes to just Sunday River like it well enough but agree it isn't the best. They're considering saying "screw it" and just getting passes to Jay next year. It is nice, however, that the SR Pass works at Sugar Loaf and Loon as it does offer a lot more variability.

Just my thoughts.
