I will never EVER ride without a helmet. It has great ventilation and the ear flaps are removable, but it still gets a little warm in the Spring when the temp climbs into the upper 40's and above. Not a big problem. I sometimes just take it off on the lift every few lift rides...

this is all speculation. obviously wearing a helmet is safer than not wearing one but in this particular case none of us know exactly what happened. there may have been a pre-existing condition involved. also the trauma doesn't necessarily happen at the point of impact but can occur in a different area internally due to the brain's movement within the skull, movement that a helmet wouldn't necessarily prevent. this video explains:

Uh... right.

Which resorts have successfully kept news of deaths on their slopes "hush-hush" over, say, the last ten years?

And yes, of course her celebrity in life contributed to the celebrity of her death. So goes the world.

I don't think we have the whole story. Although she fell on a green slope, they were concerned enough to call patrol, and later an ambulance (which was sent away). I don't think any of that was because she was rich or famous. It had to have been one nasty fall. My own two worst falls in recent years were both on green trails, and in both cases I was really glad I was wearing a helmet.

In the spring it's very tempting to go without the helmet but this kind of tragedy reminds us what could happen even on a green trail.

Did you know that a skier was killed at Mount Snow back in January?? I didn't, and the only way that I found out about it was 2 weeks ago when my condo association sent out an e-mail to the owners announcing the memorial service for him that was planned. He owned in the complex where my place is. Civil engineer from Central Jersey, 2 kids roughly aged 10 and 12 both involved with the Mount Snow race team. I read the local Mount Snow area paper cover to cover each week, and obviously pay a bunch of attention to Mount Snow stuff, and frankly was shocked/suprised when I read about the death of this man in the e-mail 2 weeks ago, and it was a trauma situation where he went off the side of a trail, hit a tree and was DOA when he got to the hospital.

NBC News last night said it was 50, but I believe that included Canada.

I think they also included those foolios on snowmobiles as well.

I read one time (cant find the article now) that most major ski areas average one death per season. I have no way of verifying that, but it might not be far off.

I always wear my helmet. The insulation comes out, the vents open and the ear flaps come off. And Im honestly more worried about someone else plowing into me, or one of my buddies like Gangsta or JTJ running me over if I fall in front of them.
Besides, you can get f*** up just as easily in the spring. Id hate to get hurt on the one day I decided it was too warm to wear my bucket. I dont think they should be mandatory, accept for kids. If your old enough to make the decision not to wear one and you f*** yourself up, thats your decision
