actually i see many parallels with what went on here with nyberg. like nyberg, rathbun was an outsider who perhaps didn't understand the local culture. interestingly they named their "beancounter" as the interim replacement. hopefully he does as good a job as mike's done. however while park city has been willing to give mike free reign as long as he was exceeding his numbers, am worried about any repercussions from this season, when through no fault of mike's, his numbers are gonna be way down.rogman wrote:Story here:

Comments are more interesting than the story; very telling. I liked Dave when he was here; good guy in a horrible situation.

Re: Nyberg Fired!
Lot of parallels with Killington and Bachelor: both have a strong local culture and aren't really destination resorts. They rely on locals and day trippers. Dave, as a Vermont native, probably understood that better than most would. Unlike Killington, Bachelor does not have the low hanging quick ROI investment opportunities, so the resort has been bled dry. The best Bend aficionados can hope for is that Cumming tires of the ski business and liquidates in favor of assets with a more consistent income. I, too worry for Mike, as someone else said, no one makes it to retirement with POWDR.

Surprised Rathburn made it as far as he did for this long.
He was never fully part of the solution here

Re: Nyberg Fired!
When Rathbun arrived at Mt. Bachelor in 2008, the mountain struggled to make $5 million per year. The past couple years have been more than double that. The locals are frustrated with the lack of investment. A 10-year Master Plan, finally approved in 2013 by the US Forest Service after five years of bureaucracy, includes a much-desired new lift and trail complex, a much-needed new day lodge and other welcome improvements. The trees were felled for the new lift two summers ago but Cumming hasn't been willing to buy the $7 million lift. So everything is on unofficial hold with no definitive direction from Cumming either way. Rathbun and the marketing department have been left in limbo - unsure as to how to explain the situation to the vocal locals. In the meantime, all the Powdr resorts' earnings are being used to fund newer, non-skiing initiatives.
There is also the element of Powdr Enterprises. This business unit launched in 2013 to "leverage the unique and powerful assets and audiences of Powdr's portfolio of businesses." Enterprises has become the central focus of Powdr and late last year, they launched a "marketing services" unit that is expanding rapidly. The mission is to centralize as much marketing as possible. Some believe it takes boots-on-the-ground knowledge and perspective to successfully market a place like Killington or Mt. Bachelor, where the locals are very intense, passionate and loyal. Marketing the resorts from Utah with a bunch of newbies at the helm gives some people reason for pause. But those who aren't enthusiastic about the new Powdr vision are no longer welcome.
I'm not sure to what extent Rathbun shared his frustrations about any or all of this, but John Cumming has a reputation for extinguishing dissent. He operates with an inner circle of people who only say, "great idea!" to all of his plans.

Q-Bachelor? When a ski area is poorly managed you mark the name by adding a "Q". This is now an industry standard. ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

Comment section is just awesome. I vacationed in Bend 2 summers ago. Great town, had July 4th dinner at the mid-station restaurant, mountain looked top notch. 400+ inches so far this season. Would love to ski there someday.rogman wrote:Story here:
