Over-summer snow storage is becoming fairly common for Nordic (XC) race venues. This article is a little old, but Craftsbury has been doing it for years in VT:

whatever happened to those portable snowmaking units that were once written about. they looked like box trailer, could produce snow regardless of outside temps.
if they could make enough to cover preston's for a summer day or two, i'd be there!

That's is far too much square footage to be covered by the snowcone machines.

Agree it's not a very big area.
The Craftsbury saved-snow is enough to spread over about 2km come November.

^ha 50 vertical feet, novelty skiing, but admirable nonetheless

the article mentions the 2008 opening on october 19.
brings back memories! skiied fresh low rider woods, and two investigatory runs down cascade that day. snow was heavy but kept all the snakes at bay. around 3pm my legs cramped and i couldn't even walk. took a break and got some last runs in.
love those freak snowicane events!
