I agree with you. As a parent, I ski behind my kid 15-20 feet to protect them from recklessnes.

When someone skis in between me and my kid at high speeds -- and I think 15-20 feet is pretty close -- that is a recipe for disaster.

There is only so much you can do.

i'm with ya. when skiing with my kids, the wife is with us. if anyone messes with us, SHE'LL track em down while i hang with the kids. THAT would be ugly.

all kidding aside, like it or not, it's fate. it's a minor trade-off when compared to the benefits our entire family derives from skiing!

Agreed -- I know in the years to come, my kids will appreciate it. I started when I was 4 and it's one of the best things my parents did for me.

I don't know why but we've never had any incidents with the young-uns that I can remember. Just episodes that they caused themselves.

Maybe it's because they were mostly in ministars, and we didn't take them out much outselves.

Next year, we'll be done with minstars and Snowpricess will be joining the alpine hopefuls.

Iceman really improved a lot after his first year of hopefuls. I'm expecting much the same from SP.

The older one is in hopefuls. The younger one has outgrown mini-stars -- and the cost is not worth it anymore. Next year they'll both be in hopefuls.

outgrown ministars at age 4? Wow, thats quite a skier you've got there...

Actually, now that I think about it, he/she should have been running interference on you, not the other way around - if they're THAT good ;-)

negative. They turned into lumps yesterday afternoon, iceman just wanted to practice on the wooden rail they've got setup next to the ATC.

I finally talked them into doing 2 runs. Funny this is, even though Ice said he was "too tired" to go out skiing, he ended up doing Conclusion by himself (because it's over SP's ability) both times, and hucked the cliff to boot. I've got video of it.

Then when he heard on the radio that his mom and other zoners were in Julio, he was really pissed becuase he had wanted to do Julio and Anarchy all day. Go figure. I think "too tired" meant "just plain lazy"

Within a span of about 20 minutes, they were 2 or 3 ambulances hauling into the parking lot and a bunch of staties. It was weird to see that thing land and as i was walking to my car, the ambulance with one of the injured went by and they were holding up IV bags and working him/her over. Point is, it can happen anywhere.
I watched a friend get loaded into a chopper once... She got plastered on the hill by a "hit and run" - after a year and a half - she still is trying to get back together and out on the hill...

Really scarey stuff...
Saw that at Hunter about 8 years ago, the last time I ever skied there on a weekend. Someone did a face plant full speed on a tree and left a good deal of his blood on the slope. Awful to see the event, the aftermath, and the chopper airlifting the guy out of there.

When I was at Las Lenas a guy fell at the botom of the Marte' chute - hit his face and proceeded to slide down the big face at the bottom of the chute.. Left a blood smear about 40 meters long for the duration of my week.. Until it snowed..

that'll stay in your memory for a while.

one thing that struck me was how good that pilot had to be to land a chopper where he did. The parking lot sits in a little bowl between the ski area and the access road out which is also up above the lot. The winds were blowing REAL hard for ct and the lot is barely lit at all. The guy circled once or twice and then just dropped it in the empty half of the lot. You gotta give it up for these guys.

Snowshed parking lot?

I've seen choppers land there several times, once or twice at night. Just
about the only relatively flat terrain around.

An interesting "older kid" perspective on little kids careening down the slopes in a full snowplow and/or making unpredictable moves (btw...these tiny tots--cute as they are-- don't know what the heck they are doing or where they are going most times if the parent or responsible party is behind them)...

A little background first: My son is 11 yrs old, 1 year in the Killington Hopefuls and 1st year J4 racer. He has been skiing Killington since age 7 and knows the marked trails and intersections like the back of his hand. He's a solid skier and not a hot dogger by a long-shot.

Anyway, this weekend my son was telling me that he is very frustrated with some of the really small kids (more or less babies he said) being on slopes where he says they do not belong. He told me that many times this season he "had to take the fall" so that he did not hit one of these snowplowing mini-wonders as it careened in front of him. He told me his most recent "bail out" ended with him landing on his side and that his arm really hurt. He said the tot and parent combo continued on their way totally oblivious to the fact that he had to more or less jump over the berm to prevent a collision.

He says this happens almost every time they are out to some kid in his racing group, and that the kids in his group always inevitably fall or roll out of the way, and one day someone is going to get hurt.

Keep the really teeny kids off the main blue/black runs on the busy weekends please--at least until they are old enough to understand the skier's responsibility code by themselves. I don't want to have to take my pre-teen kid to the ER with a broken body part anytime soon!

I told him at the 10 AM that if he wanted to do tree runs he would have to ski with me. He opted to go with you to Bear and later on to stay with you and the Snow Princess so he missed out.
