The electrician just left and I didn't feel like driving to the gnar solo as the fellas left around 10 or 11

we'll be shredding gnar on sunday though. you?

Simple way to cut through the Killington-style BS of claiming all maintenance as no-distinctions-made "capital": call it "maintenance capital" and trumpet it as a separate line item showing how dedicated you are to maintaining the resort.

Why do all the smart people work for Mount Snow and Okemo? Why can't Killington seem to get their hands on any of them? Oh, yeah... they'd probably want benefits, hours, knowledge that their jobs will still exist in a year...
Killington said $3.3 M in Capital and $2 M At the Grand, by the Grand people.

And in addition to the above there was around $2 M in Maintenence, which was not brought up in any of the press releases, that came out here on Kzone from I believe Tom.

So. . . .
At the risk of arguing with someone whose head is perpetually jammed three feet down into the snow: no, Skippy... what Killington ACTUALLY said in that press release was this:

KILLINGTON UNVEILS $5.3 MILLION IN RESORT IMPROVEMENTS, NEW PROGRAMS, ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES FOR 2007-08 SKI & SNOWBOARD SEASON

Hmmm... no mention yet of any distinction between what Killington is spending and what the Grand's owners are spending. Just a big, eye-catching number, the generic term "resort improvements", and lump in "new programs" and "environmental initiatives", while you're at it.

Let's face it -- most people don't read past the headlines. But let's continue, anyway:

Killington Resort enters the 2007-08 ski and snowboard season with more than $5.3 million in resort improvements and new programs to enhance the overall guest experience. In addition, Killington is implementing new environmental initiatives in an effort to reduce the resort’s overall carbon footprint.

Hmmm... still no distinction, and a repeat of that big shiny $5.3 million number. Well, that's just the first paragraph. On to the next one:

“This will be our first season as a new company and we’re focusing on improving our overall product and the guest experience. And that means focusing on every detail from snowmaking and grooming, to our ski and snowboard school programs, to food and beverage quality and value,” said Chris Nyberg, Killington Resort and Pico Mountain president and general manager. “Moving forward our mission is to exceed customer expectations, be innovative, profitable and environmentally responsible.”

Blah, blah, blah. BS, BS, BS. Most people have stopped reading the release by now, which is just fine for our intrepid K-Mart PR Director, because now we'll finally get around to...

Leading the list of improvements include upgrades to the world’s most extensive snowmaking system; remodeled Long Trail Pub at the Snowshed Lodge; a fresh look for select lifts and lodges with new paint, furnishings and carpet; $2 million in owner upgrades to the Killington Grand Resort Hotel and Spa...

Ah-ha! 200 words into the damn thing, we finally learn that nearly half of the spending on "improvements" is actually a result of Grand owners -- not Powdr -- fixing up their own condos at the Grand, just as Geoff correctly noted.

The long and the short of it is this, Skippy: Killington did NOT say that they were spending "$3.3 M in Capital and $2 M At the Grand", as you wrote above. They said they were unveiling "$5.3 MILLION IN RESORT IMPROVEMENTS, NEW PROGRAMS, ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES". The difference is that the press and the rest of the world was on its own to pore through the rest of the release to discover what the hell they were actually spending their money on -- and WHO was spending the money.

And forget about any discussion of "capital" or "maintenance" here -- they just lumped EVERYTHING under the term "improvements" and hoped folks would just focus on the big number, not where and how it was being spent!

Killington doesn't need to follow Mount Snows lead on how to "trumpet" their on mountain maintenance as a separate line, cus K doesn't trumpet it at all!

The Grand is Killington managed, and therefore is "apart of the resort". Adding them in was more to get them some "publicity" where the improvements they made would otherwise not be mentioned anywhere else. . .

K doesn't trumpet mere maintenance "at all"? What the hell do you call new carpets, new paint, new furniture and the like? The difference is that they don't use the word "maintenance"... because "improvements" sounds so much better, and allows them to lump those costs in with other big capital-type projects.

And are you seriously claiming that the $2 million spent by the Grand owners was added to the total Killington "improvement" number as an effort by Powdr to do a good deed for the Grand owners -- a favor, if you will, to those nice people at the Grand, so that the rest of the world could know about it?

Geez, Skippy. I try to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you really may be a dumb as everyone else says you are!

Asked about skier visits at Peak Resort’s areas before the acquisition, Boyd said they do one million visits annually; the goal would be to add around 500,000 at Mount Snow and about 200,000 at Attitash, a significant increase to the company’s business, he said.
Rutland Business Journal 3/8/2007

A million skier visits on a half dozen small hills, five of which have around 300 feet of vertical. Cha-ching! Cash cows! Cost of up-keep must be very low - a janitor and a good broom could keep those places groomed. All the money is going to New England.

I'll bet you Snow's gonna have more than 500,000 skier visits this year... when all is said and done, this purchase will look like the bargain of the century!

$2,000,000 spent by powdr for powdr, in maintenance for the resort, NOT trumpeted. Was brought up on Kzone, by Killington, and thats it.

Your argument went totally to the grand, not the maintenance of the resort.

Mount snow is trumpeting their on-mountain maintenance, Killington did not, yet you are praising them for seperating it from their "capital"

There was no distinction made on the Grand, on if it was capital, maintenance, whatever... Thats not even part of the argument.

[thump thump thump thump thump]

In case you're wondering, that's the sound of me slamming my head repeatedly against my keyboard.

The $5.3 million -- sorry, the $3.3 million -- included several items, like paint and carpet and signage -- that was mere MAINTENANCE.

Mount Snow is taking those items out of the mix and talking about them separately.

Killington lumped at least SOME of them in with their bigger number.

Killington may have spent ADDITIONAL monies on maintenance, but that's NOT what we're talking about here!

Oh, and by the way... if Killington really did spend ANOTHER "$2 million", even if only on boring ol' maintenance... don't you think it odd that the only folks they ever mentioned it to were the denizens of K-Zone? Doesn't that seem... suspicious?

Of course it doesn't! Not to you, anyway. That's what makes you Skippysnow, Powdr's own big slobbering lap dog!
