That is mostly correct. Initially democrats were staunchly segregationist. That started to change when Kennedy hit the scene. A bit later, Johnson became president and in 1964 signed the civil rights act, while Goldwater opposed it. Then Nixon pursued his "southern strategy" of pandering to southern whites. This all led to a seismic shift in support from R's to D's on the issue of racism, and a corresponding shift from D's to R's among segregationists/white supremacists. It's basically been that way ever since. So I think it's more fair to say that the civil rights movement caused both parties to swap sides on the issue of racial injustice.

Why wouldn't they?

David Duke was a Democrat in the 80's.

If that’s all your evidence, case dismissed.

I assume there won't be any more debates for at least 2 weeks since the president and first lady have tested positive!

Trump's literally debating Savannah Guthrie while taking questions from the public.

Biden is rambling like senile Jesus over on ABC.

I actually thought Biden sounded pretty good, and I wasn't expecting that. So far he's delivered in both debates.

As for Trump, he did much better this time around, I think. He definitely had a lot of questions thrown his way about his taxes, the qanon stuff, white supremacy and all of that, but I don't fault the NBC host for asking about it. These are issues Trump created while he was in office by 1) not releasing his taxes like he said he would, 2) retweeting nonsense, and 3) fumbling the question about white supremacy groups in the last debate. They are all fair game and if the other guy had done similar things he would be facing similar questions. That said, I think Trump fielded them pretty well this time around. Maybe he actually took the time to prepare this time, or maybe last time he was already starting to feel the effects of covid, I dunno.

One thing's for sure from the tenor of both debates- this election is a referendum on Trump. Both candidates were talking about Trump more than they were talking about Biden or his proposals.

This election comes down to voting for Trump or voting against Trump. Nobody cares who the other candidate is.

Biden’s ratings beat Trump’s head to head this week. Trump must be apoplectic.

From today’s news:

Nielsen figures showed 15.1 million viewers watched Mr. Biden’s ABC town hall event and 13.5 million watched Mr. Trump’s event on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC.
