I just got off the phone with Shortski. The worst blowout is in front of his (former) house. He reports that it is now completely repaired and the construction equipment has moved elsewhere. That was the only erosion that took out the westbound lane. They'll be working on guardrails and river banks for the next year but it won't be long before both lanes are open the whole way from Killington to Woodstock.
That's great. It's amazing what can be done, when Bureaucratic BS is eliminated. If this was a normal highway design project. It would've taken 3 years of permitting approvals and design reviews by the DOT to get this job advertised for construction. Then it would've taken atleast a year to construct.
I'm going to stop there before it becomes politcal rant.

thanks. thats a great shot.
its awesome that so much equipment is on the scene. Does anyone have any update on Rt 4 and River Road?
Route 4 at River Road is open with the washed out section being rock/dirt fill. River Road is also open from Route 4 with the same type of temporary fix. Route 4 is now completely drivable from the disaster in Mendon east all the way to I - 89 although they "officially" continue to limit traffic flow through Bridgewater to Killington to certain hours in the morning and afternoon.

Thanks. All the info is very helpful. Trying to relay this to all the people staying in our house for the season. Is it smooth sailing from the access road to 91, via Rt 4 through the River Road washout?

I haven't done it yet but I'm hearing that once you get through Bridgewater you're in pretty good shape. Just play nice around construction vehicles and understand that they have the priority.

I probably won't be making my first trip up to VT till mid Nov via that way.
Nomination accepted. Finn is female. That is not open to interpretation. She is female and she is a nice person with a good heart...and definitely female.
Bad news, although who knows how accurate this is....The head of the Mendon Selectboard said in a Rutland Herald article that Route 4 probably wouldn't be reopened until some time in October. I think he's managing expectations, but you never know.

Route 4 mendon will be completed a lot sooner then expected. Most of the base will be done by the begining of next week and there will be two paved lanes by the end of next week. (given no major set backs or flooding)
I wonder if they have a schedule to rebuild the bridge and road to the houses on the now island. I understand the only way out of their is to hike or quad over the mountain.
