easyrider16 wrote: Oct 27th, '20, 17:58 Was reading this story about Deandre Hopkins flipping off a caravan of Trump supporters:

...and I'm wondering about the mentality of people who organize caravans of cars driving down a highway in support of a politician, any politician. Who are these people who go to rallies and cheer on politicians? I mean I believe it's important to vote and to be aware of what our leaders are doing, but it has never once occurred to me to treat them like rock stars or anything other than normal human beings just doing a job. I mean I'm more inclined to mistrust them then to cheer for them.

I think the cult of personality that surrounds Trump is scary and dangerous. It's like he can do no wrong. We are talking about a guy who encourages chants of "lock her up" about his political opponents. This is America. We're supposed to be better than that.

It happens throughout history and is almost always rooted in right wing, authoritarian nationalism.

Nah it happens on both sides of the political aisle. See communist Russia, China, the French revolution... it happens any time people put tribal loyalty above human decency. The end justifies the means. Sacrifices for the greater good. Same old bullsh!t.

I would suggest that comparing modern American Progressive and left leaning politics are mostly incomparable to the policies and outcomes of China and Russia.

The China and Russia examples along with other bogeymen such as Venezuela and Cuba is a bunch of disingenuous bull crap drummed up by the Fox News and Rush Limbaugh's of the world to sow fear and spread mistruths to gullible conservatives.

While there certainly are outliers and extremist liberals (same is true for conservatives) modern mainstream Progressive policy is barely center left from an American perspective and actually center right when compared with European Nations. Western Europe and Scandinavia serve as models for most Progressive policies, but those policies still fall far to the right and appreciate capitalism more than those examples.

Just look at Biden's proposed tax policies. His corporate tax right matches Reagan's. His federal income tax rates are to the RIGHT of Reagan. Yet, the Trumps, Limbaugh's and Carlson's of the world portray Biden as some sort of radical socialist and place Reagan on the Mt. Rushmore of Conservative Presidents.

And the yiddleheads of the world take a fork and knife to the obvious bull crap and come back for seconds.

Business and corporations receive bailouts or other tax benefits = Conservatism.

Individuals get bailouts or other tax benefits = Liberalism

Covering individuals pre-existing conditions or universal healthcare = Total Socialism

That's surprising. She was quite effective, I thought, and she really towed the party line.

Edit : looks like she’s still Press Sec. She seems to be struggling with Hatch Act compliance so maybe this has something to do with it.

Maybe it’s a lie like most other things she says?

Somewhat lengthy at 17 minutes, so I half listened as I did something else. And then skipped through the next day to a few sections.

This guy is not alt right, he's not a Walmart shopper, I don't think he sounds like a bitter clinger. You might even say he's ... educated.

Listen to why he's strongly for Trump. And if you judge people this way, look at his credentials. He addresses and acknowledges why most here are against Trump, and yet while holding all those faults in his hand, he thinks Trump is a man for our times.

"I know Trump has many faults. I myself sometimes cringe listening to him. Sometimes he is his own worst enemy. He is a braggart, often mis-informed, petty, sometimes even vengeful. And more. And yet, we are very lucky to have him. I am almost prepared to say that having him is providential. How else to explain that we find ourselves with this most unusual, most un-presidential man who has just the attributes most needed for this moment. At any other time, he might well have been a bad president. But in these times, these revolutionary times, he is the best president we could have had.

He has the indispensable attribute of a leader - Courage. As a leader must, he goes where others are afraid to go. And he has common sense, which means he generally wants to go to the right place. Above all else, and above anyone else, Trump is committed to America. He is unreservedly, unquestionably, pro-America. He feels no guilt for America's past. He makes no apologies, he concedes nothing.

... And despite what one hears ad nauseum from the Democrats, Trump is among the least racist Presidents we have ever had.

... I think this election is that important, and I think Trump is that good...."

Results matter.

Lots of kind words there but not much substance. I didn't watch the video, though.

Courageous is not a word I would use to describe a President who shied away from confronting Putin over election interference, backed down from Pelosi over a budget fight, and most recently allowed the senate majority leader of his own party to derail the simulus he wanted before election day without even a fight. I'm not sure there's a single thing he's done in office that can be called courageous.

I also don't see why he would be all that different from Biden or Obama for that matter. Sure, some slight policy differences, but what makes him providential? I mean that's something you'd say about Eisenhower or Churchhill for guiding us through a world war. Trump has managed to screw up the one major crisis that happened during his tenure. Those other leaders rose above party to unite citizens in crisis while Trump has managed to politicize the pandemic. Sorry, I just don't see it. What results? What has he actually accomplished?

Honestly this guy just sounds like another Trump supporter putting tribal loyalty above logic.
