Can Any Killington Locals Explain This Mess To Me?

I own a condo at K. and pay taxes. I also spend alot of weekends there in the summer. If I could vote on these taxes I certainly would. And posting here is getting involved.

K will never draw any people in the summer. They will just continue to raise taxes higher and higher to fund wastes like the Green mtn golf course. What's wrong with letting the mountain run the course they have and collecting sales tax on the rounds? No one from anywhere near any metro area will ever come to K to see a show, or an art exhibit. They have access to the best there is. You come to K. to ski, that's it. Face it.

There are the retirees from Florida who venture up to VT to escape the heat and they do play golf. I do believe, however, that because of the economy there will be less of them this year.

We rent out our condo to them.

Been lucky, booked for last 8 years, this year included.

How much do you get for your place in the summer compared to what you would get in winter?

Rentals in the summer have always been substantially lower than during the skiing season.

That's my point. If there was any real value to the summer activities then the rentals would be the same as in the winter. If the taxes double on our condos we will not be able to recoup that from rentals, especially in the summer. The winter doesn't need any new "economic development", the skiing takes care of that. If there were any profit in art galleries or more than one golf course than somebody would have allready done it.

He's not going to answer the question. If you had the opportunity to see the parking lot around the K1 last summer, the turnout was very weak compared to a ski turnout in May when all the other ski areas are closed. If that's a "spark of life" for the town, Killington has a huge problem.

I believe there were more cars in the parking lot last summer then there were last May .

What do you base that on?

It is obviously pointless trying to have an intelligent conversation with someone who expresses themselves as you continue to do.

Then why do you think K won't go for it? It's not incremental it would cost a ton of money and I don't think they're here for that reason. What do you think it costs to open 1 lift for an extra week when no one is up there spending money for tickets, its serious money. They get to make those decisions, they bought the place.

They run the gondola for the mountain bikers in the summer, why can't they run it for skiers in late spring?

Mountain biking is the strongest money maker during the summertime, it's been growing and it also provides some spark of life at the end of the access road. I think it's reasonably successful piece of an attempt to try and find their way to some summer activities in the area. Between the PICO circus and Gondola in the summer I would think they are lucky if they break even. But at least there is an attempt to get it to happen.

I know they exist, so someone please post a late May spring skiing picture so those non believers can actually see the size of crowds that showed up to ski one trail. Hell, the OC club of Albany ran buses up for May Day and June 1st Races.

In the late-1990's, Killington saw more traffic for Sunshine Daydream weekend in early May than they now see all summer. The main lot filled and cars were parked down the Access Road. They used to have to run shuttles up from Vale and Snowshed. When it was sunny, a huge number of people showed up. Killington marketed the hell out of their spring product and was very successful at it. Nobody else bothered staying open since Killington blew them away.

And I believe you will win that award. 8 weekend days in an avg month . How many skiers per day parking in those lots . Look today

Let's see about this. BMMC was today and we were warned not to bring our own beverages and to limit the party and no dogs and etc. etc. etc. If you showed up you were greated by a Sheriff and the Rent-a-Cops making your welcome all the more enjoyable.

The weather for the past week sucked, and the forcast was for heavy r*ins and wind. Yep, I would use today as a good guage of how the skiing and attendance would be at some resorts, not history or past experience.

Again, does anyone have a picture of the parking for say a BMMC of yore or May Day or Memorial Day or even a mid week June 1st? Hell we would fill the June 1st lot and get to ski for FREE anyway.
