Incredibly grateful for the useless information I didn’t ask for. I’ve done back country cat skiing in the Canadian Rockies where a transponder (and training to use it) was mandated. I was asking for someone with expertise on avi forecasting and prediction. You guys ain’t it. I won’t be wearing a beacon tomorrow and I doubt I’ll need powder straps either. Sheesh.

From the only person on this site that has actual avi knowledge…

East coast or west coast, anything steep that has snow should be track packed before snowmaking on it. While rare, you put a load of man made snow on top of a weak layer and it will rip. Seen it twice, been a part of in first hand once.

Besides that, nothing else is sliding anywhere in bounds, anywhere on the east coast.

Actually, there was a small slide on skiers right of the Skyeburst headwall a few days ago when snowmaking began. A fairly steep pile had built up there from the gun that’s running top right pretty much all the time. When guns on skiers left were added, they built up snow on this pitch and eventually a slab broke free. The area where it ended up extended about 20 or 30 yards down the headwall. It eventually got buried and was groomed out.

Correction: That was not a steep pile, that was an Ice Cone.

For those that weren't here or forgot, Double Dipper slid pretty much the whole trail width circa 2008, depositing Barcalounger chunks into the snowmaking hydrants. Hydrants lost. Luckily not during operating hours. Been a few others.

Believe it's happened on Conclusion as well. The one on Double Dipper was intense.

Barcalounger chunks? Kzone will use anything but the metric system! These examples are snowmaking induced slides, My question was really about a naturally occurring slide. It just seems like the combination of a smooth hard frozen base with some light powder might create conditions for a small naturally occurring slide. Looking at the warmer temps probably can’t happen. New snow will likely bond well to the base.

Killington shut down the guns on Skyeburst and Needles late in the day, but continued on Bearly. I assume the last has enough to groom and open but I doubt they’re done there. Bear Cub and Sundog have been announced for next week. The Sunrise chair is running this weekend.

BTW, happy hour starts at 3PM at the Sunrise Bar and Grill. Food has been amazing there this year, better than anything on the Access road. Try the duck! A limited number of 4$ budlite tall boys if that’s your thing. /shameless plug on behalf of the excellent people that work there

if the lifts ever open today, bearly listed as open. like GE, probably another paint & run job to get open for the holiday, similar to what they did at xmas. will probably revisit both. meanwhile, hurry up & wait ...
