Kid's Cothes

Post by Emroch3 »

As we continue to deplete the college fund.. any of you with kids (5-6) have ideas on: (1) materials (thinsulate v. down or fleece, goretex v. nylon, etc); and (2) bibs or no on pants ( I would think bibs would keep the snow out but be a pain in the bathroom). Would plain ski pant and long parka work?

You all have been most patient-- it is appreciated.

My kids are 10 and 13 now. Bibs are the way to go with layering under coats. Good hat and great gloves which can be tough due to their hand size. May need to start with mittens first with no poles. They grow out of everything quick so try to get them a bit big. If you get two seasons out of anything you are lucky.

both my 5 and 7 yo wear insulated bibs. hoodies with helmets. mittens. bottom layer is under armor, then fleece then insulated parkas. we dress them in clothing that is waterproof and keeps them warm. we've never had our kids say they didn't want to ski because they were cold or wet. in fact, they've never said they didn't want to ski! we always buy stuff on sale, end of season, pre-season, etc...

When my daughter was little we always did the balaclava under the helmet instead of a neck gaiter. I don't know if this is still the best way to go, but it worked for us. (She's 16. There might be a better alternative now.)

This I believe would be unchanged: always, always, always have extra mittens!!!

I agree Marie, you should always have extra mittens because they either lose them or they get them so wet that you will need another pair for the next day.

Thanks b-5. All listed garments seem to be made of nylon and polyester-- are these materials sufficiently warm and waterproof these days, or do I need to look for thinsulate (is this just polyester with a special name) and/or gore tex or some other waterproof material?

Don't forget a full face mask for the kids.
Get a pair of googles that fit with the mask or use a needle and thread to stich up exposed areas between the mask and googles.
Frostbite is a big concern with the kid's and can quickly ruin a ski day.

P.S. 2 pairs of Mittens and socks are a must.Ski socks,mittens get lost,wet etc...
