How can you not like Jay Peak?

"...When you aim then shoot for every penny, sometimes you end up hitting yourself squarely in the foot. Our skiers and riders love to ski and ride, especially our season pass holders. We owe it to them to push as hard as we can."

A huge tip of the hat to Jay Peak.

I really wish Steve Wright were still at Killington and given the autonomy to manage the Killington brand. He's a pillar of marketing competence and totally credible. It's a dramatic contrast with what replaced him at Killington.

Funny... it's something we haven't spent too much time addressing here: thanks to the gross incompetence and arrogant prickishness of Chris Nyberg, Tom Horrocks and Dave Rathbun, the entire PR task for every other ski resort in Vermont and the East has been made that much easier over the past two years.

Think about it: If you're in a conference room while someone else is making an ass out of himself, or when you were a kid and a different kid in your class was getting reamed out by the teacher, or when your significant other is ripping up a different person of your same sex, what do you naturally start doing? You behave yourself. You smile more. You look more professional. You speak softer and more intelligently. You crack a friendly joke and lighten the situation. You become more sympathetic and likeable, if only because you're not the one screwing up.

That's everyone else in Eastern skiing right now. As long as K-Mart continues to play the role of the Evil Dishonest Incompetent Arrogant Empire, every one else can afford to play... The Good Guy. The Reliable Ol' Pal. The Best Friend. The One You Can Trust.

This email from Steve is an excellent example. Let's be honest... he takes four hundred words to say one basic thing: unlike those money-grubbing eff-you bastards down south, we're just a buncha regular shlubs who like to ski, so come play with us this weekend, and if we lose some dough in keeping the lifts running a couple extra days... ah, who's counting, as long as we all had fun?

I remeber Bill Stenger when I used to teach up at Jay Peak.
He never walked through the cafeteria/lodge without bussing trays and tables on his way through.
I believe he knew every employee by name before Christmas week.
He was quite possibly one of the best big bosses I ever worked for.

This is one of the best messages I have seen from any business! Well done Steve. Good competition makes everyone better.

I'm boycotting GregZone for life but I certainly have no issue with Steve Wright using a shot of his youngest daughter in that piece. Like always, you got exactly what he thinks. Suspend tee ball and soccer for the weekend. Go out and play in the snow one last time.

Saw that. They are debating the merits of biking helmet vs ski ad, and whether or not the little bit of blood on her nose and jacket should have been in the photo. I loved the expresion, and as Steve points out, that is the reason he chose the photo. I paid the most attention to the ad copy though, that is where the message is. Duh.

I think this is way better than the "If you're not here for the mountain than you're not here" campaign. I found that clumsy, even though the Jay folks seemed to like it and thought it was on point. It only made sense to you if you knew Jay already. The new ad is more of an invitation to come discover what they have to offer, not an exclusionary statement to those that "aren't there for the mountain"

Sugarbush has their own cutie on their website:

She was there Sunday, a huge smile on, herded away from playing in the mud puddle by her parents, still ready for whatever came next after skiing one of the more challenging runs in the east.
