K1 Closing time
Isn't the K1 supposed to close at 4pm? Me and many of my cohorts enjoy the last gondola as a cap to the day and a time to think of what run you woud most like to do for "dessert". It seems that the operators do not always like to run until the end and remove the clock at the bottom so we do not know when 4pm is. Then they close the lift early. On Saturday,at 3:58, I and many others were turned away before 4 pm due to "conditons"(There words not mine). There were many people still in the maze but a rope closed the entry.
I know for a fact that Randy, the manager of the lifts at Bear, will run Sky Peak for up to 20 minites extra to get everyone up and back to where they started.
I went around the maze to get on the lift and was assaulted by a mechanic and one of our esteemed "Mountain Ambassders" who said the lift was closed and I cut the line. I got into a heatred verbal discussion saying the lift closes at 4 not 3:58 and I have to meeat my kidss at Bear. A liftie (short guy named Mike) said "Come on we want to get out of here too". Then the ambASSador tried to grab my pass! Because he closed the lift early and I called him on it. Isn't it time to get rid of these schmucks!!! What good do they do. Early season when inexperenced boarders and skiers are jumipng into the middle of tiny sections of trails they do nothing. Has any one ever been helped by them? And what is the deal with closing that lift early. It took me 40 minutes to get back to Bear where my kids were waiting.
Has this happened to any one else? Does Jeff Temple Or Mike S condone this?
It says the lifts run till 4 not 3:58.If there is a change in policy make it known.

Usually they close the K1 at 4pm, at least they did last year.

Re: K1 Closing time
I saw the lifties pull the clock down at ~3:50pm on Saturday 2/23/13. I sort of scratched my head about it at the time. There was maybe about 50 people in the maze and I heard a short male lifty comment to a girl about not being able to get everyone on the lift before 4pm, so pull the clock, which she did, if I recall correctly.bears ass wrote:Isn't the K1 supposed to close at 4pm? I'm quite sure lift ops and upper management is not telling them to do this.
Previous years, they have been always been good about running until 4pm sharp. They need to close top of the maze at 4pm, and make sure cars get fully loaded.
Might call in tomorrow and see if I can get a hold of somebody.....
Also, while we're complaining about ambassadors, a week or two ago I came down to the K-1 to report a seriously injured skier off lower Ovation. There were 3 ambassadors there, with one small pocket radio between them.

Give me a # or email, I want to call
Re: K1 Closing time
The opening to the maze should be closed off at 4pm period, and not a second sooner.
Something needs to be done about this as it appears it's a problem.

Re: K1 Closing time
Ambassadors don't have the authority to take your pass as far as I know? Did he just reach out and try to rip it off your jacket/pants? Gotta be more to this story. Were there any F bombs, a little grabbing, pushing, punching, etc...?
3:58 is really cutting it wayyyyy too close if you have to get back to Bear Mountain from K1 base? Not saying anything you've said is not true. I have no idea.
Don't worry, Highway star will get to the bottom of this!

Re: K1 Closing time
I do beleive that the opening and closing is via a phone call from headquaters. I am usually at the SPK for midweek opening bell and I see the lifty in the shack tacking a call then giving the thumbs up.

Re: K1 Closing time
Rather than this being a giant conspiracy to cheat skiers out of 2 minutes, isn't it just possible that someone's watch (the lifty's or yours) was off?

I was thinking the same thing.Bubba wrote:Rather than this being a giant conspiracy to cheat skiers out of 2 minutes, isn't it just possible that someone's watch (the lifty's or yours) was off?

Still, if you have to be back at Bear, you just can't wait until a few minutes before 4 to get in line at the K1.

Re: K1 Closing time
Two thoughts, maybe three.
#1. If I ever was in a position to make rules for a Ski area I would make sure every bottom and every top had a Digital clock and that it was sync'd to the same clock at Mtn Ops HQ. Err, Uhh, isn't that easy with all Cell Phones sync'd to Zulu time??
#2. Lift closing time is not lift line closing time. If they have a ten minute line at 3:50 then the closed rope should go up. HOWEVER, let us remember we are supposed to be in the HOSPITALITY industry, satisfying customers. Lift Nazi's don't usually get brownie points on the customer satisfaction surveys.
#2a. FWIW there is always the base to base shuttle bus which does run later than the lifts, I know, I've had to bring a group back on the bus from Bear after 4pm.

Re: K1 Closing time
This isn't customer centric at all. There is no way you know how long the line is as you head for K1 late in the day. Is it a 5 minute line? 10 minute line? No line? How would you ever know if you'll get on? If the advertised closing time is 4pm, everyone who is there at 3:59:59 should be let on the lift.Stache wrote: #2.
