Day 109 Feb 19 2015 early report

Post by shortski »

At Bear, 9 above zero......yeah. First time above zero for opening bell in 10 days. Light dusting to an inch overnight, no wind. Light snow, snow showers off/on most of the morning. Nothing like the feel of natural snow under the skis. Should be another nice day on the hill. Come get some.

Come get some what?

Come As You Are"
("Nevermind" Version)

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As an old enemy

Take your time, hurry up
Choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

When I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria
(And I don't have a gun)

When I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun

Memoria, memoria

Well that 'splains why the bar was empty around noon. You did miss out on a near refresh snowfall day. I'ld say 4 to 6 and snowing steady all morning. May have been 12 at the base, but the little thermometer by the trail map on the peak said a nice brisk -5 and then the wind started blowing. Was nearly empty until after 10:30. Even the lodge had room to spare.

BTW, I got your Free The Powder gloves. Fingers were near done after 4 runs and then, before I had checked the temp on the peak I took them off for an equipment adjustment. Damn my hands got COLD. Thaw out, liners in and they worked fine. May need to do a Sno-Seal on them when I get the chance.

Checking out conditions at Whistler Blackcomb. It's 45F at the base and was above freezing yesterday at the summit. Looks like without snowmaking you couldn't ski to the bottom. The west is getting killed this year. I wonder if anyone out west is planning a trip to the east?

We are seriously considering coming to K the week after Easter instead of going to Vail.

Going to keep an eye on the weather for the next few weeks before we decide. Usually by this time we have our flights and condo out there booked.

Snow flying in the air with the clouds veiling a dull sun. Summit temperature of seven degrees with the newest powder starting to add up. Soft carving turns were found on Downdraft. Left side of Lower Ovation had soft bumps with no ice to be found. Superstar snow pile was groomed overnight. Snowmakers are building a growing mountain at the top of the trail that I could not resist sidestepping up. Growler trees had lots of gnarly fun lines. Untracked powder that I found was set up in places so stayed on top in places then breaking thru others. Stopped at the Peak Lodge for a break. Finished the day as planned in the Canyon doing runs with heavy snow coming down. Mercury dropped to zero with increased wind by the final lap. Finished the day riding the K1 solo as the mountain never really got crowded today.

Grade B+

Quote of the Day - Superstar is a sight that needs to be skied.

We have already committed to K for Easter and Spring Break 2015, instead of points west. Base depth is looking great right now, six weeks out. Saving thousand$$$ can not be overlooked. It still snows in April, and temps are rarely sub-zero.
