The untouched glacier.

Anyone care to wager how long Super Star will last? I'm not tech savvy so I don't know how to put up a Poll. It will be interesting to see how long the untouched treasure will last this spring.

Does not getting skied on / groomed extend or shorten the life of the glacier? Or does it make no difference?

I'm sure it has some impact but if I were to venture a guess I'd say that no grooming/skiing allows the snow to become much more "brown" with dirt etc and that increases the melt...at least on sunny days...

in the end sun/heavy r*ins and overnight temps are a biugger factor than skied and groomed or left as is...

Hadn't really thought about it til this thread, but if/when we ski Superstar it will be the first time I'll be happy they groomed it prior (love arriving on a sunny spring morning and seeing it hadn't been groomed).

It was never finished, so it is smaller to begin with. I think the sun eats the snow the fastest.

Let's see what the month of April brings weather wise... Lots of overcast and cool? Warm and sunny? Wet? A snow storm or 2?

No grooming, which melts the snow in the process, combined with no skiing will result in the snow lasting longer. This combined with no skier traffic, combines to prolong the snow.

Adding to the snow lasting longer, not using the pulled up areas to patch the needed areas will greatly expanded the length of the snow time

Granted this all weather dependent. With the sun high in the sky creates much more daily snow melt. One week of unseansonal high temps, and or a week of r*in(which is very common here. If we ever got as much much moisture in the air in the winter as we do in late spring/summer, we would get more snow then Tahoe!).

So the snow base has to many variables to consider based on the one fixed variable of no skiing and no grooming.

what about the dirt on the snow? a few sprinkles of unsalted sand makes a huge impact on my driveway when the sun is out...

Doesn’t affect it. As the base is large and this will create the same affect as salt to ice a trail as long as the overneight temps freeze it up.

Where does the dirt on the slopes come from? Skis. It’s mostly wax based and from dirty skis. It will no longer be increased. In the trees yes the dirt does continually increase. This is due to the failing “stuff” (“leaves, pine cones and sh*t on trees ) from trees.

If and when they start the demo of the old lodge, there's going to be some dust in the air...

Will it suddenly turn Supe the color of dirt? Probably not

the longer the delay of the new KBL construction goes on, it is possible the original KBL may be in use for one more season. at this point, it is pretty obvious the new KBL will NOT open as scheduled in November. (yes, i know... well, DUH!) :-o
