Saturday at K - the blue plate special

It started out as a promising day, 8" in the driveway, fresh tune
on the skis, still snowing.
I didn't really care what was out there, I was just glad to be back in
town and on the hill. Wasn't as crowded out there as I expected
or as windy. Early on the fresh snow was great, but it was light
and gone all too soon.
I call it the blue plate special because under that "champagne" power
was ice as slick as a dinner dish. The fresh edges came in handy
but didn't last long either. Snowdon was the best but early, some
runs at Canyon ok, but real busy by 11am. One of those days where it
seemed people came out of nowhere. You'd start out barely anyone
around you, next thing you know, there 17 people behind. Hard to
get Nancie's terribly unfortunate story out of my head, I was seeing
people out of the corner of my eye coming at me all day. And there
were indeed people sliding out of control everywhere. Another wacko
Saturday at K. Best poach of the day was Flume, until the payback
on the runout, blue ice all the way. Worst trail choice of the day was
Conclusion, rock garden over the cliff trashed my edges.
Snowdon woods was the place to be, best by far. But that as tracked
out worse than I've seen it this year, nearly every corner from Northstar
to Great Bear. Don't underestimate the power of the blog. Word is out.
Best late run was around Patsy's out and over from the usual track.
Found some good untracked last run. Sun was out too.

Buzzkill the woods at Snowdon were great early in the morning. Did some other woods elsewhere on the mountain including Toilet Bowl ( went in there trying to escape East Fall). Unfortunately I found the same rocks that I found a week ago. It seems like I always pick the same line in there. Was disappointed by the condition of Needles Eye under the gondola. The wind definitely did some damage there. Surprisingly, I still found some soft snow on the right side of the Fiddle. I would say that was probably the best open trail I did today.

I think I spotted you coming down Northstar around 10:30?
We were coming off Vagabond, thought you might stop but you flew by,
in the zone, zoom.
Escapde woods was holding up pretty good, sure had better snow than
the rest of the Canyon. We just couldn't bear another scrape down
Lower Cascade, so that's how we ended up dipping the rope on Flume.

Had a wicked day at Crystal today. The steeps were cruddy, but the B3's made them out to be pow!
Inadvertantly had my biggest huck to date: was coming over what I thought was a spine, but turned out to be a cliff. Gave a little extra kick. Cleared the rocks but landed a bit too compressed, and thus, ended up with knee sprain number two of this trip.
My buddy, though, a former UU racer couldn't tell my ability was comprimised. A local. He guessed it was a 20 to 30 footer.
Day 6 is in the bag. Day 7 was axed because of an unfriendly flight schedule. Jetblue leaves only at redeye. Wheels up in 3.5 hours.

Put in lots of runs from first chair until 12:30. Could find pow on the treelines here and there but the blue plate special was everywhere else by late morning. I didn't bother go out after lunch due to 1) tired quads from lots runs 2) ice and 3) people came out of nowhere.
Have become much more aware of who is above us due to Nancie's injury and letting them clear out, that is for sure.

the trees filled in REAL nice with the unexpected snow. hit fresh on my 1st 4 runs. still some junk underneath, but my guns really float nice. then had to trek back to sunrise to ski with my wife and youngins. when they tired, i finished the day doing laps on the partially groomed fiddle. musta just dropped the ropes that were up for the comp. soft and sunny - great combo! the whole time the sun was out it was still snowing - surreal combo. Sat. night we watched the firewooks from our condo. seemed like they were aiming them toward us because they were exploding nearly overhead. spectacular! spent sunday skiing with the fam. boys are making major strides. great weekend, prolly my best so far.

I can't remember now what trail we were on today (it might have been the Fiddle) but at a certain point we turned around and saw what looked like ants coming down behind us. We hightailed it out of there. We spent most of the day in the woods so the crowds were not a problem for us.
