Rental houses 9+bed require central station Fire alarm

Outcome of inspection.....
to have anything more than 8 people requires a fire alarm system w central monitoring. Yes, brings false alarms.
One pull station per floor so three for me - yes, the ugly red ones
Strobes/horns on each floor (maybe each bedroom but I wasn't taking great notes)
Stobes/horns/pull stations are all wired low voltage
Fire/smoke detectors are all wireless
Monitoring fee $400/yr
False alarm fee....pricey for sure. Can't imagine billing the renter.

So also require other annual or semi-annual inspections
Fireplace flue inspection - annual
Boiler inspection - every two years
FA system - every year

Also requires you have internet or phone all year long (I usually turn it off during the summer months)
He also found some various building issues for correction....more stuff for the fall list of stuff to fix

Anyway....not as bad as I expected.

Obviously he's making enough from his many properties that he sees it as just a cost of doing business.

Plus if he's doing it legally, it's all a write off.

Kind of stupid in areas with volunteer fire departments, unless you think saving the chimney is important.

Who benefits:
Insurance companies
Builders/contractors
Hotel owners

Who loses:
Consumers

worst case was sprinkler system required - what a mess that would be and would be all exposed. I would start removing beds to get back to 8 before a sprinkler system. The FA system is probably a capital expense so can't write it off but depreciate it. Wonder who pushes this agenda?

There has been a push to get a full time K FD.

I literally cannot find the actually requirements anywhere...does anyone know where to see them online besides the expensive and daunting list David Green gave us in order to be compliant?

So it was not only me that got a visit? I could not find an audit list to verify. He is also a building code inspector in addition to fire. He says its on VT fire safety website.

Can someone please post the actual list of requirements? There are lot of people getting calls and visits for sure. I just want to see in writing the requirements before I spend a ton of money on this.

It's in there but you won't really find it all in one place.

You have to jump around in that document to find the sections relevant to each location.
