Rickety old defunct lifts.

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
That's interesting about the D lift. When that was installed at Hunter in the 60's it was a revolutionary idea - a triple chair. Wasn't there a second double on the west side for a while? I never skied Westway or rode that lift. I haven't been to Huntah since 1989 when I had to pass on a weekend at K to see a Stones show in AC. I haven't heard anything good about the place since Vail took over.

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
the ricketiest lift i can remember riding was at a long defunct ski area in the catskills named bobcat. place had 2 t-bars and as each t-bar would come by, the very old lifty would say "nope, nope, yup" as he grabbed and tested each one while spitting tobacco juice. classic. you hoped you got a "yup" .
place was even more "rustic" than plattekill. had zero snowmaking and an old broken down groomer. open on weekends usually after a dump. the summit elevation was higher than hunter and like platty, they got a reasonable amount of snow and had some pretty steep runs. if i remember, the very "cozy" base lodge had deer heads hanging everywhere - a bit disconcerting for a vegetarian. definitely a trip back in time.

Wildcat is still in operation. Collins is defunct.G-smashed wrote:One that I forgot was the Wildcat chair at Alta. This was like sitting on a 2X4 with nothing to hold on to. I also forgot the Big Spruce double.
Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, then overwhelm you with their experience.

Duckling, old SunBowl and Province chairs with the rubber wrapped grips at Sunapee.
The old South Ridge triangle chair.
Old Valley House & Castlerock @ Bush
All the old Carlevaro & Savio detachables, Ego Alley @ Mt. Sneaux. Bear trap.
Ol' Reliable at Attitash with the weird side safety bars. Topnotch was getting real sad looking at the end, too.
Second East Bowl @ Cranmore.

Folks sure have a different idea of rickety than I do. Some of these are just plain old but display nothing indicating they are held together by bubblegum.

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
Bonanza and outpost at pico. True fact, bonanza is the only aerial lift in vermont without an evac engine. Rumor is there's a hand crank. My guess is it's so short and low to the ground they'd just get the ladder out! It's interesting to see how small the drive motor is on it. Pico itself is a lift museum. The newest lift was installed in 1989. Outpost is a treasure also and if u look at the chiars... well better not to.
Non k or pico was the old double #9 at peak n peak. It was an old hall double that served the only part of the area with no lights or snowmaking and was open weekends, when they could get it running. The rest of the resort switched to CTEC lifts in the late 80s, all still there.

Also the only lift I've been evac'd from is the Red chair at magic. Still love that lift tho. Heron double chairs... love'em.
I never rode the black chair. Didn't sound reliable tho the stories I heard.

All the pomas at Okemo. I especially have memories of the Red poma that launched you into the air at the beginning of the long trip to the summit.

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
- Original Castlerock
- MRG Single prior to the rebuild
- Big Spruce
Those were all old but not held together by duct tape.
Top choice in terms of rickety and held together by tape and bubble gum?
- Bousquet's original Yellow Chair
- Honorable mention also to Magic's Black Triple

Agree with this list! Rode all 4 of those back in the 80's/early 90's!Captain Hafski wrote: ↑May 10th, '24, 08:29 Quite a few from the lists above !

Got stuck on the triple at West for about an hour one day back in the mid 80's. Talk about a sore backside after sitting on that glorified cafeteria tray of a plastic seat that was on that thing!!

C&S lattice chairs take the cake for me and I think the only full original C&S lattice chair left in the Northeast is Outpost? Followed closely by the other erector set Mueller and Stadeli lifts of which there are a few more left around.

A quick look at Lift Blog confirms that Outpost is indeed the last of its kind.newpylong1 wrote: ↑May 10th, '24, 11:36 C&S lattice chairs take the cake for me and I think the only full original C&S lattice chair left in the Northeast is Outpost? Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
I think the original A double at Huntah and the original K peak double were identical C&S lattice chairs. Both had midstations and were about the same length and vertical. Huntah did not give out blankets. BTW I purposely excluded K from my list. Let's add 1 more - The Roosevelt Island Tram which was very similar to the Snowbird tram.
