Taking advantage of the mild weather, we actually put our Christmas lights on the house down here in the flatlands on Sunday. We tested it but then shut it down again - kids were a bit disappointed at that. I told them they would be back on the first Advent Sunday - that should be the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

I usually buy them at the church every year. I guess I will do the same this year. Now if I can only remember to light every day the number of candles that should be lit. My advent wreath only holds 4 candles and the package I get from the church only has 3 purple and 1 pink candles. What is the extra candle for and what color is it?KBL Ed wrote:That's November 27, Ty. Do you have advent candles (4 + 1)?

We have 4 and 1. The four Advent Sundays, and then Christmas Eve.
A purple candle is lit the first night and all of the first week. During the second week, an additional purple candle is lit. During the third week, the rose candle is also lit, and on the fourth week, all four of the colored candles are lit. The central white candle is lit on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The circle of the Advent wreath and the evergreens that make it up both signify God’s endless mercy and undying love. Three purple candles and one rose-colored (pink) candle are evenly spaced around the wreath. There is one larger white candle in the center of the wreath.
Each week, an additional candle is lit. As the light grows brighter, we are reminded that the Light of the World will soon arrive in glory.
The central white candle is to be larger (often thicker) than the four in the wreath. This relatively recent addition to the Advent wreath signifies the Light of Christ and is first lit on Christmas Eve and relit on Christmas Day.
Es war sehr schoen.
Over ten years... not including RSN or K-Chat. Way too much time wasted.

I've had my advent wreath since the first year of my marriage (12 years ago) so it must have predated this new tradition. I guess I can place another candle holder in the middle of the wreath for the 5th candle. Thanks for the explanation. I honestly did not know about the fifth candle.KBL Ed wrote:We have 4 and 1. Actually, I did not grow up with this tradition but picked it up after I got married when I saw the advent wreath at Macy's or Fortunoff (can't recall which one it is was) and thought it would make a nice centerpiece for the holidays. Of course, the advent candles were always lit in church. It is a nice tradition and hope that my children get something out of it. I think it gives more meaning to the reason we celebrate Christmas.CAPBOY wrote:I don't recall Jesus saying anything about this candle stuff. Nothing about in the bible. reefs....nothin. I think you need to resume saying the rosary every night during the Advent season.Atomic1 wrote:Ty ,You remind me of my mother when I was small child, we used to say the rosary each night we would light the candle.tyrolean_skier wrote:I've had my advent wreath since the first year of my marriage (12 years ago) so it must have predated this new tradition.
