Reckless Skiers

Post by dssberg »

It's surprising more people don't have the same experience that N2K had -- not that I wish it on anyone.

I was on Skyeburst on Saturday with my daughter (4 yrs. old) and some kid ran right into her.

On the next run -- same trail, I was skiing 15 feet behind my daughter and a snow boarder decided to use us as slalom course.

On Needle's, the same thing happened with an out of control skier.

If I didn't have my little girl with me, I would have chased them all down and ripped off their tickets.

K has gotten crazy. The trees are the only safe place.

People have to stop with the tough guy sh*t. I'm not denying there are ass holes out there wreaking havoc, but your going to get your ass kicked if you roll up on the wrong guy because you thought "he got too close to you".

Again, i think its time to call social services. There are 100s of other very nice places to take a 4 year old skiing that are way more safe. Did you ever hear of Pico........

Also (And i know I'm going to take a ton of sh*t for this) - but maybe you should consider taking your kid on a different trail until he/she gets a little faster and becomes part of the flow of traffic..

I'll give you a little sh*t for that. You're assuming that the kid was going too slow. Maybe the guy who overtook them was going excessively fast.

My argument against skiing recklessly around kids is that doing anything to make the sport less accessible/fun/comfortable for future generations of ANY sport does a disservice to everyone. If you turn off an entire generation of rugrats to skiing because you recklessly plowed through them because "they shouldn't have been on that trail", then a valuable future market's gone. You think lift ticket prices are expensive now? Any mountain that would even stay open based entirely on ticket/concession sales to retirees would jack up lift ticket prices exorbitantly.
Two sniffs, a snort, a fly, a turn and a grunt; and it was so simple like the jitterbug it plumb evaded me.

Maybe - but sounds like the same thing happened a couple of times...

A kid going slow on a crowded day - with a nervous parent following - on a high traffic "advanced skier" trail.. I don't see how some sort of "incident" could even be avoided..

Sorry...

I think if you are skiing or riding you should approach this in the same way as if you were driving a car on the road. If there is a slower car in front of you do you crash right into it? I would think that you would slow down before getting into an accident. The same goes for skiing/riding on a trail, if someone in front of you is slower then you, slow down until you can safely pass them.

SnowPrincess and myself encountered a guy with his 6 year old son on Mouse Trap yesterday afternoon. I asked the guy how old the kid was because he looked kinda small (Snowprincess is 5)

The 6 year old kid was wedging turns on Mouse Trap - looked like it was his first time. The dad was coaching him on making each turn. It was fine because the trail was pretty empty.

Of couse, SP beat the snot out of the kid on Mouse Trap, doing carved parallel turns.

Then, when they got to lower Chute, I was amazed that this kid beat SP down. The reason for this? SP was doing more turns, carved parallel. THis kid just straightlined the entire lower chute (in a semi-wedge), straight through the Caper intersection.

It think his dad needs to work on his safety a bit...

Maybe if you gave a little more detail about speeds etc... It would be easier to make an assumption more in line with what you expect of us..

Very true...

BUT - (and I'm not saying this is what happened) - if your on the Thruway and someone is doing 15mph.. I'm sure you would be pissed and wishing that person would drive faster...

Killingto on a Saturday with a 4 year old on Skye Burst. That wouldn't have my choice for a trail to ski with my kid when she was 4.
