My girl had only snowboarded once (3 years ago) when she was in Italy. Her boyfriend at the time took her to some glacier (Val Senales). She said she couldn't do sh*t. The only way to get out (just like the Horstman glacier at Whistler) was by T-bar. She busted her ass all the way to the bottom then wasted all day trying to get back out.
Last summer her and I hooked up and I started taking her out on the boat. She tried wakeboarding and loved it! By the end of the summer she could cross the wake and get about 2 inches of air. I told her that her wakeboard skills would cross over to snowboarding in some ways. She bought a board and she got in 15 days last season before she broke her wrist in February. 6 weeks later, she was back on the board for the final days of the season. She got pretty good for her first season. Now she can cruise down a groomed single black diamond (by PA standards). Now she's working in Sacramento and I'm moving there in January. Snowboarding is all she wants to do and I'm sure we'll grab a couple of season passes to one of those Tahoe resorts. She's hooked, Woohoo!!! Next year she wants us to go back to Val Senales so she can rip down to the bottom of that glacier!
I got my cousin into snowboarding last season too. He got in about 10 days. I let him use one of my boards, and a spare pair of boots all season. He didn't take long to get good but thats because we grew up skateboarding. He just needs to buy his own sh*t this year. He's hooked.
People I work with hear about my riding and skiing and want to come, but the price of rentals and tickets deters them when they're not sure they'll like it. I look for good deals and events so that they don't have to spend a lot of $$$. Last year I got 8 people (including 5 newbies) to go to Wisp for their 49th anniversery thing. Tickets were $7/day for the weekend. Snowshoe had a "midweek fire sale" that included 3 nights lodging and a 3-day lift ticket for $99. That was a rediculous deal that I couldn't pass up. I got 13 people (but just 3 newbies) to go to that. The 3 local resorts nearest to Baltimore are all owned by the same company. They all have "college nights" every Wednesday beginning in February. A 5 hour lift ticket, rentals, and lessons are only $20, so I take as many people who are willing when that begins. Last year I probably took about 10 different beginners. Out of everyone who began last year, I only heard 1 person say they didn't have fun.

Last year, I taught this young kid who's a friend of the family...it was quite an experience! Here is the TR:

Also, my nephew Zackery schooled *me* in snowboarding! Basically, he coaxed me down the blues at Ram's. I would not have done that if he hadn't been such a good cheerleader/coach.

Because we ski at the Loaf for free with the pass, it costs us about $200 Each with only $95 each for the kids, 5 1/2 days of skiing and 4 1/2 days of lessons included. AND, we have a coach for the week for the adults, AND they set a race course for us with a coach mid week. For $600 you can't send 4 people anywhere like that.SkiDork wrote:why don't you take her to K?Dr. NO wrote:Granddaughter went with us for a week at the Loaf last year. This year she is already asking when we are going again. Also, this year her brother will be joining us. We will start him on skis, but he already has his eye on a snow board.

John Macawley rocks... Great guy, great skier... he would be my first choice, then Rick... by the way, Rick has a great furkid named Buddy....SkiDork wrote:Who did you have?Keithus wrote:I need someone to teach... me.
Any specific recommendations on level III instructors at or around K who're good at helping an advanced skier bust through to the next level?
I had a couple of lessons last year, but didn't really connect with the instructor. He seemed more interested in looking good and being cool than in teaching a grown-up.
John Lamb, Rick Svenser (if he's still there) Rob Beers, and John Macawley are a few names
Have a great day
