aspen pics (note to HS - yes, it's better than Killington)

Post by Steve »

tomorrow is a backcountry day for us, so my resort skiing portion of the trip is done.

But first, there are some good pics from the drive from Kansas to Aspen.

Image
gnarly looking storm that we were approaching..

Image
wait- holy sh*t- is that a funnel??

Image
it never touched down.. but I've never seen a funnel before.

Image
cool r*in though.

Image
finally, denver comes into view, and the rockies behind it.

From Sunday, I took only a couple of pictures:

Image
entry shot, of a run far beyond my ability. I did ski it though (well, I didn't actually "ski" it.. I did get down it.)

Image
here's knuckledragger taking his own entry shot.

that's it for sunday. monday pictures:

Image
nice view from the top of the elk camp lift (snowmass)

Image
but there was this gate at the top of the poma.. hmm.. wonder what was on the other side of this?

Image
oooh, looks nice.. let's get a closer look..

Image
wow..

Image
looking further left..

Image
i wonder what the view is like from that ridge?

Image
yep.. worth the hike..

Image
looking further to the right..

Image
..and further to the right..

Image
..and further to the right..

Image
no wonder i can't breath up here..

Image
knuckles and i decided to ski ajax/aspen in the afternoon.. so we took the bus over and hopped the gondi.

Image
there isn't a house in this picture under a million dollars.

Image
there's pyramid peak jetting out from behind the ridge.

Image
snowmass, from aspen.

Image
highlands, from aspen

Image
then, on the last turn of the last run of the day..

Image
my very first core shot!

Image
and it's a beauty!

Image
from the side..

Image
I sure am glad I demo'd, and paid the extra $3 for damage insurance!

Image

nice trip

I worked out there for 2 years with the ski company. I think about moving back everyday. As most of your pics show it is only sunny or snowing there. There really is rarely a cloudy day. Great stuff, great place.

yeah, that was my object lesson of the day:

when you're in colorado, above 10,000 feet, DO NOT f*** around with the sun.

just got back from the market.. aloe, sunscreen, chapstick, and a razor. (:

Nice pics Steve.

Seasonal jobs aren't a problem. Finding a place to live is. There are plenty of places to rent but bring extra cash. You'll probably spend way more than you earn. It's worth it though.

It's fun to browse the real estate listings. Amazing how many $10 million houses can be jammed onto a mountainside.

not totally sure yet.. karl stall told us to drive behind aspen to a spot somewhere in the conundrum valley, where we'll be picked up in sleds.

spdfrk is loaning me an avy beacon.. I already have a shovel and probe. what I don't have is knowledge of avy safety (other than what you can get by reading these boards and watching ski porn DVD extras)..

so i'm going to learn a lot today.

is this a question??
wtf do you think?

ok, assuming that you think I'm a total asshole who would mislead people into thinking I knew more than I actually did, then yes, I told them that I know nothing.

hell, one of them is loaning me a freakin' beacon!

so relax, g. you don't need to check up on me.

next question..
even if we don't ski today, we're at least taking sleds into the BC.
