Skiing in Italy
Cortina & Val Gardena anyone been? I have never been to Europe have had pretty good input on trips on this board would love to hear others experience . Any European trip for us has to include some stayover in Italy. Looking to start planning next years trip now. Just starting to research. Any input on best time of the year to ski, etc appreciated.

Skied at both places this season. Stayed about 17 miles away in Brixen/Bressenone. My suggestion is to stay in Selva/Wolkenstein though. Val Gardena and Cortina are probably the most scenic places you'll ever ski at. Pic in my avatar is the BFR in the middle of it all.
Ummm, and don't ski off piste unless you're a ninja. They actually have polizia on the hill there and will interogate you. Do a search here, you'll find a few posts by Rustyk, Skibumtress, Phantom, Stormchaser and myself.

skiied madona di campiglio many moons ago...
yes, indeed scenic! but we were there in mid/late december and it hadn't snowed very recently, so the surface was akin to EC hardpack/ice.
the available terrain while we were there was pretty flattish - in stark contrast to the spires that surrounded us.
saw a recent report on TGR that involved skiing the dolomite's chutes...if i find the link, i'll post it here.
Mtn. Man : I guess different ski areas have different off-piste policies??

It was a tour with a local corporation in CT, we had about 50 people there.

I know Cervina well.. Thats on the West side of Italy , north of torino.
Backside of the Matterhorn.. Italians call it Cervino. It is high up.. snow and skiing is assured ( as assured as one can be in these warmer days) ..plateau Rosa.. You can also ski into Switzerland, down to
Zermatt ..then back up and over down to Cervina. If it is steeps you want ..go to France at Chamonix or Val D"Isere..or Verbier in Switzerland Italy is scenic and the people and food are marvelous..but there is better skiing on the "North" Side of the Alps. IMHO.

Skied Bormio, Italy this season - awesome town and the mountain is great - Italy was hurting for snow this year, but we've been there before with plenty of snow . . . also can do a day trip to St. Moritz, Switzerland and Lavigna, Italy from Bormio. We did a three-day trip to Amsterdam on the way home.
Cortina is very nice too . . . and you can take day trips from there as well - Sellaronda and some others that I cannot think of right now . . . did the three-day trip to Venice, which was a bit cold for March, but still great. The food in Italy is truly incredible.
We have been going with the same group planned by HappyTimeTours.com . . . great fun and great people . . . all ages and walks of life:)
Good luck - you'll love it . . . even if there is a bad snow season, there is always plenty to do!!!

Policia said it was Italian law. We saw signs at every resort we were at prohibiting off piste skiing. We got nabbed in Cortina. Others from our group got nabbed at Monte Cristalo. And we saw people not in our group get caught in Val Gardena. Enforcement may differ from place to place, but it seemed to be around in some level just about everywhere. We continued to ski off piste after getting caught on our second day, much more discretely this time, and no one bothered us...Mtn Man wrote:Probably. The only place that bothered us was Cortina, Tofano side. Then again, we were pretty visable where we were. After that, we were pretty stealthy with the off piste runs....snowpez wrote:

That said, if you go to Cortina...I can tell you how to get to the goods...
