Actually, the info I got there is what led me to the two choices I came up with above. Before that, I was just going to hike Marcy. Vin, how difficult is the hike you suggested and where is the trailhead? I will be up there until Tuesday and am considering this as a second hike.Vinny Vincenzo wrote:Yeah Andy, what did AsswipeZone give you?

I don't think there's any climbing involved, just miles of trails that snake around several small lakes and ponds. Access is on Rt. 74 in Paradox, about 3 miles off Exit 28 on I-87.andyzee wrote:Actually, the info I got there is what led me to the two choices I came up with above. you should come to lake placid on columbus day weekend. there is a ski jump competition sat and sun - called falming leaves festival. the theme is blues, brew and bbqs--really good bands, microbrews, rail jam, fun kids stuff, giveaways and then sat night there is a 50-day to whiteface party countdown with music and NY premiere of the meatheads new movie wanderland.RENO wrote:Haven't been to the northern Adirondacks in a while. Maybe we'll head up there this Fall for a long weekend.
if i had to choose a weekend, i would do that. you can hike on sunday or monday! i should be a travel agent.
We did go with choice two and it was an amazing hike! Great view all the way up and down. We did it on Monday so it wasn't crowded at all.laseranimal wrote:wright peak/Algonquin is an amazing hike with great views of Colden, Marcy and the Mt Jo/Lake Placid area
however, because its relatively short and you get to climb the 2nd highest mountain in NY state, it will be very crowded. It also is somewhat of a brutal climb given how much elevation you gain in a short period
You could do Porter/Cascade, again likely to be very crowded but an easier hike then Wright
I haven't done them but I really want to do the Brothers/Big Slide and Giant.

100% correct on all points. We started the hike at 9am and didn't finish until 7:45 pm. It did get a bit scary hiking out in the dark for the last 15 minutes! We were well prepared with everything but the light and gear for camping. I'll have pics up later and thanks for all the tips.madskier wrote:Your 2nd choice would be mine. The views from Wright and Algonquin are spectacular! The descent from Algonquin is tricky and steep. I would suggest trekking poles, but they arent absolutely necessary. The walk through Avalanche Lake is equally breathtaking. It's a long trip, so be prepared with all the appropriate gear, water, food, maps, compass, etc. You should be prepared to spend the night! This is a wilderness area and very remote and not for the novice hiker. If you are with a group, stick together! it's amazing how many people can get lost or separated. Enjoy, and post some pics when you get back!
Hiked The Brothers and Big Slide on Saturday 9-22-07. Intense hike, 2800 vert gained over approx. 4 miles. Hiked up The Brothers to Big Slide Summit, (the ladders are really cool as you near the top). Hiked down Slide Mt. Brook trail to The Phelps trail and back out to The Garden trailhead. 7.5 hours and 9.5 total miles.laseranimal wrote:wright peak/Algonquin is an amazing hike with great views of Colden, Marcy and the Mt Jo/Lake Placid area

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.

Big Slide mtn via the Brothers. trailhead at The Garden in Keene valley. Get there early otherwise you have to park at Marcy field and they shuttle you in. If you get out of the woods late you're screwed if the shuttle isn't rumming. I don't know what time it runs to. We got lucky and there was one open spot when we got there. $5 to park at The garden. We're probably going to do Avalanche Lake and Algonquin in the next week or so. Google The Brothers and Big Slide and all kinds of reviews will pop up. Enjoy-- it's a great hike.

Well we're going Tuesday morning, so hoping it's not a problem parking. Really liked the Algonquin hike, but it is a workout.borgy wrote:andyzee wrote:What is this Brothers and Big Slide thingie.
