Anyone know what the current status is regarding the necessity of having a passport upon entering Canada?

If you fly, you need a passport. If you drive, you need a drivers license and a birth certificate. Next month, they're going to start a wallet-sized "passport card" program for people who drive.

Go to your post office and apply for a stinkin' passport. All it takes is 5 minutes to fill out the form, two 2x2 passport photos you can get taken anywhere, an original of your birth certificate, a valid drivers license, and $97 you can put on your credit card.

And it takes for freakin' ever. Since all these new laws went into effect, it takes months to get a passport. I've been to Boston twice in the past 2 years to get one "instantly." Both times I have stood in line with people who filed well in advance of their trips, well in advance of "standard guidelines" and were there because they were leaving the next day and their passports had not yet arrived.

And unless you get the first appointment of the day in Boston, you can count on standing in line for hours. The system is a mess.

Right... which is why anybody who doesn't have one should go down to the post office today and get themselves a passport. At this time of year, it should take a couple of months. I don't have much pity for anybody who puts it off.

We actually recently renewed both kids passports (and one of ours, I think) and were pleasantly surprised at the speedy turnaround. I think it was only like 2 weeks to get them back

Yup. Get one even if you don't need one.

At this time of year last year, it took well over 4 months. I didn't even bother with mailing anything, just went to Boston. And it was worth showing a little bit of pity to the guys in panic mode behind me in line, because they bought me coffee.

I think there's a fast track available for passports for an extra fee.

Numerous commercial services can get you the passport within a couple of weeks, without you haviing to do dawn patrol or stand in any ridiculous lines.

For example, see
http://www.passportexpress.com.

or

http://www.itseasypassport.com/

(I've used its easy, and found the process to be headache free)
