Re: Gore Tex
It is definitely worth the price when you want to ski in the r*in. I bought my Goretex stuff I think 4 seasons ago and still performs well after all these years. The only thing that I find needs frequent replacement are the Goretex mittens or gloves and that is because they get cut up by the skis when you hold them. I say go for it.shredley wrote:Is it worth the price? I need a new jacket, but the prices are pretty crazy. Anybody have any input on this? Other Recommendations?

Re: Gore Tex
One Word....EBAY...why pay retail prices when you can get the same exact coat for half or less...I just bought a brand new snowboard jacket last week. price in store $180 plus tax...price on Ebay $56 plus $10 shipping..brand new tags still on it.shredley wrote:Is it worth the price? Last year got $360 Burton boots for $150 plus $20 shipping, brand new
I go to the store try stuff on, find two or three things I like and then find them on Ebay

Yes in my opinion it is worth it however not all Gore Tex jackets are created equal. When purchasing a Gore Tex jackets take not that there are many different kinds of Gore Tex materials. Each has it’s own special properties and applications so going to the store and just buying the cheapest thing with the word Gore-Tex on it might not be the wisest move. Spend some time on the official Gore Tex website and see what would work for you and your needs. Jackets not only come with different Gore Tex fabrics but they also come with varying layers of Gore Tex. Usually from 1 layer to 3 layers. I have a Summit series shell from Rossignol with 2L Gore Tex and it has proven to be more than adequate.
On a side note, Gore Tex also makes a technology called Air-Vantage. It is the equivalent to a down jacket that you can adjust the amount of feathers inside. Down works because air is trapped between the feathers and air is an excellent insulator. The Air-Vantage system has a bladder inside the jacket which allows you to increase or decrease the amount of air inside (Thus mimicking more or less feathers in a down jacket) I picked up a Rossi Air jacket for my girlfriend who always complained of being cold and between the 2L Gore Tex and Air Vantage system she has been warm and dry.
Good luck on your quest for some technical outerwear.

You should also check out other waterproof fabrics.
My Burton Jacket uses Entrant for waterproofing. I was out in the pouring r*in on Saturday shoveling snow for over an hour and was completely dry when I was fininshed thanks to this jacket

How do you rewaterproof them?DMC wrote:When you buy a waterproof jacket at a store...
Tell the salesguy that you want to take the jacket and run water over the sleeve in the sink of the bathroom...
Then see if indeed the water beads and runs off...
Lots of GORTEX only lasts a couple seasons...
But you can rewaterproof them

You have to add a D.W.R. treatment(durable water repelent) to the wash when laundering you stuff..tyrolean_skier wrote:How do you rewaterproof them?DMC wrote:When you buy a waterproof jacket at a store...

It's temporary.. So you'll have to do it again...
One main thing is to keep you waterproof breatable stuff clean.. So the can breath and the moisture doesnt get stuck on dirt and wot-not...
The thing the stinks about your stuff getting wet is.. When it gets wet it's tougher for your body moisture to exit the material...
also some ski/snowboard clothes say to run a warm iron over them to reseal themtyrolean_skier wrote:How do you rewaterproof them?DMC wrote:When you buy a waterproof jacket at a store...

Gortex-worth the Money
Hi Everyone,
I just purchased Gortex shells from the shops at the shack. They listed for $250. I paid $150. Well worth the money. I wanted Gortex shells, not lined ski pants so that I can layer under them. Yes, I got the mens large side so that I can layer. They were long, but I can sew and shortened them.
I have had Gortex rip before, but was able to get gortex material and sew a nice patch on them.
Regarding water proofing-often times my other shells I would water proof with a product called Nik Wax- a waterproof liquisd that you wash in. It works well. They also sell a spray too. I use to use scotch guard before I knew about the nik wax. You can buy it at the ski shops.

The Goretex part is a lining within the pant, not the outer shell. If the shell tore, then the material was too light. If it is a high grade jacket, send it in to the mfg and have it fixed. Northface and others will repair for free.Stormchaser wrote:Just be careful cuz Goretex can rip like a wet paper towel. My friend wiped out on a rock way right in Skye Bits on Sunday and shredded her $250 gortex pants.
