Do these work at K?
Has anyone ever tried these small 2 way walkie talkie's
at K? Can you reach Bear to Rams Head? They say

Going where the wind don't blow so strange. Maybe on some high cold mountain range.
Re: Do these work at K?
I haven't tried that specific type... but I've tried some that advertise long range like that.
The problem is that at Killington (and most other resorts), it isn't the distance that is the problem, but the trees, mountain peaks etc get in the way, so the range is typically not great.
I was at Squaw Valley one time, and we were having a better time hearing someone at Heavenly (across the lake) than we were at Squaw.
All in all, I would say that these type of radios only work with marginal success.

Don't Killington Pico
Re: Do these work at K?
Agree . . . it depends on the obstacles . . . I actually got someone at Grand Montets when we were at LaTour in France - it was amazing

Re: Do these work at K?
I have some doubts about those....I've had very good luck with some of the more expensive models in the Motorola Talkabout series. (Around $100 for a pair)
Re: Do these work at K?
I use them when I ski. That type of radio as well as the Motorola will not work from Bear to Ram. It is a line of site radio and will not go around the mountains. Works ok with trees.

Re: Do these work at K?
Unlike the old CB's which were AM, most newer radios are line of sight. If you can draw a line from one radio to the other it will work fine. Shortski used to radio to Bridgewater with the old 5 mile radio from the peak, a clear shot down the canyon. Most radios will not work from say Needle's Eye to Bear Mountain due to the valley and mountain.

Re: Do these work at K?
C'mon now Doc, you're an engineer and, although your evaluation of FRS radio coverage at Killington is correct, you should also know that frequency and output power have more to do with coverage than whether a voice signal is AM or FM. CB radios cover a band that is around 27 MHz and are 5W maximum and, at that frequency, signals can use the ionosphere for skip even though CB is technically banned from doing so. Therefore, their range is substantially greater than the FRS radios we all use which have far less power and are on frequencies much higher in the spectrum.Dr. NO wrote:Unlike the old CB's which were AM, most newer radios are line of sight. Re: Do these work at K?
So a small portable CB ( like you would carry out boating in a small craft )
would solve the problem? The key being a CB radio? ... and this is illegal?
Seems you can get them pretty small and pretty cheap. How about ?
Midland Nautico 1 (NT-1) VHF Marine Radio - 5 Watt, 10 NOAA, Uses 4 AA Batteries
Product Specifications:
# 88 Channels
# 5 Watts of Transmit Power
# 10 NOAA Weather Channels
# Up to 12 Mile Range
# 3 Call Tones Emergency Channel 16 Button
# Water Resistant
# Auto Squelch

Re: Do these work at K?
All walkie talkies are VHF and up - strictly line of sight, plus a little. Wattage only helps with distance. you still need an unobstructed path. And that quoted 5 watts is likely far less.panelman01 wrote:So a small portable CB ( like you would carry out boating in a small craft )

Walkie talkie = dead zones where line of sight doesn't exist.
Cell phones = dead zones where tower line of sight doesn't exist.
Solution:
When in a dead zone, go ski, talk later.
